Job Description:
Our client, a Fortune 500 global manufacturing and technology leader, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Platform Engineering team in Urbandale, IA. This is a hands-on engineering role where approximately 70% of your daily work will involve writing production Go (Golang) code — building internal platform tooling, APIs, CLI tools, and services that enable product teams to deliver with quality and reliability.
You will work in a paired programming environment alongside other engineers, contributing to a cloud-native platform built on AWS, Kubernetes (EKS), Terraform, and OpenTelemetry. This team values self-driven engineers who take initiative, communicate effectively, and balance competing priorities in a fast-paced delivery environment.
Note: This is a software development role — not a DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure operations position. We are looking for engineers who write code daily, not engineers who manage pipelines or provision infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
Platform Software Development: Design, develop, and maintain platform services, APIs, CLI tools, and reusable deployment patterns in Go (Golang) that improve developer experience and operational consistency for aligned product teams.
Kubernetes & Cloud Infrastructure: Configure and manage highly available Amazon EKS clusters, including node groups, autoscaling, namespace management, RBAC, ingress, service discovery, and production upgrade strategies.
Infrastructure as Code: Implement and maintain reusable Terraform modules for AWS resource provisioning including EKS, VPCs, IAM, S3, and related services.
Observability & Reliability: Build observable systems using OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, and CloudWatch — implementing distributed tracing, metrics, logging, dashboards, alerts, and service-level objectives.
Collaborative Engineering: Work in a paired programming environment, providing design feedback, code reviews, troubleshooting guidance, and technical coaching to other engineers on the team.
Agile Delivery: Plan work, coordinate across teams, and balance feature execution, platform reliability, incident response, technical debt, and competing priorities within an Agile framework.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
Go (Golang) — Primary Requirement: 3–6 years of production experience writing backend services, microservices, platform tooling, CLIs, or APIs in Go. This is approximately 70% of the role — candidates must be comfortable writing Go code daily.
Kubernetes / Amazon EKS: 3+ years of hands-on experience deploying and managing Kubernetes clusters on EKS, including cluster lifecycle, autoscaling, RBAC, and workload management.
AWS Cloud: 3+ years of experience with AWS services including EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, EKS, CloudWatch, and related infrastructure services.
Terraform: Hands-on experience authoring reusable Terraform modules for cloud infrastructure provisioning.
OpenTelemetry: Experience instrumenting services with OpenTelemetry for distributed tracing, metrics collection, and observability.
Paired Programming: Comfortable working in a collaborative, paired programming environment with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Stand-Out Skills (Preferred):
Experience with Datadog and/or Grafana for monitoring and dashboarding.
Secondary language experience in Java, Rust, or Python.
Experience building internal developer platforms, self-service tooling, or golden path templates.
Experience with Helm, Argo CD, or GitOps deployment patterns.
Prior experience in a Fortune 500 or large enterprise platform engineering environment.
