Backend Engineer Amsterdam | Build Payment-Grade Distributed Systems | AWS, Cloud-Native | €85k + Stock

  • Do you want to grow into a genuinely strong backend engineer by working on distributed systems where correctness, reliability and security are non-negotiable?
  • Would you like to work on modern payment infrastructure, learn from senior, principal and lead engineers, and become stronger in system design, production ownership and cloud-native backend engineering?
  • And do you want an indefinite contract from day one, up to €85k salary+20k in stock options, and a high-bar international engineering culture in Amsterdam?

Then this role is worth your attention.

Your employer: cloud-native payments infrastructure built from first principles

Your employer is a fast-growing fintech scale-up in Amsterdam building modern payment infrastructure from the ground up.

Many traditional players in this market still rely on legacy systems, complex operational processes and technology choices from a different era. This company is taking a different route: cloud-native, API-first and built with modern engineering principles from day one. The product sits deep in the payments domain. That means engineering decisions matter.

Services need to be secure, observable, reliable and correct. Failure handling, data consistency and production ownership are not theoretical topics here. They are part of daily engineering.

This is a medium-sized technology company with more than 30 nationalities. The engineering culture is high-bar, but human. Low ego matters. Feedback is direct and respectful. People care about quality, ownership and helping each other grow.

You will work with strong backend, infrastructure, product and business people who are building a serious alternative to large incumbents in the payments market. Not by shouting about disruption, but by building better infrastructure.

Your job: Backend Engineer Amsterdam

As Backend Engineer, you help build and operate backend services at the core of a modern payments platform.

You work on distributed backend systems where correctness, observability, failure handling and reliability are central. You contribute to services that process sensitive financial data and need to behave predictably under real production conditions.

You own your work beyond the pull request. You help design, implement, test, deploy and improve services in production. You work closely with backend engineers, infrastructure engineers, product and business stakeholders to keep improving the platform.

The main backend language in the team is TypeScript. You do not need to be a TypeScript engineer today. Engineers with strong Java, Kotlin, Go, Scala, C# or other backend backgrounds can fit very well here.

What matters most is that you understand backend engineering fundamentals: designing services, thinking about correctness, testing properly, handling failure, debugging production issues and taking ownership of the systems you build.

This is not a language-identity role. This is a backend engineering role in a modern payments environment.

You will receive regular feedback and mentorship from experienced senior, principal and lead engineers. Over time, you can grow towards senior, lead or principal backend engineering, depending on your strengths and ambitions.

What is required

  • 3 to 7 years of professional backend engineering experience
  • Strong backend experience with Java, Kotlin, Go, Scala, C#, TypeScript/Node.js or another strongly typed backend language
  • Strong computer science fundamentals and preferably MSc in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Distributed Systems, Mathematics, Physics or similar
  • Experience building backend services that run in production
  • Experience with distributed systems, microservices, asynchronous processing, queues, messaging or event-driven architecture
  • Experience with cloud-native environments, preferably AWS
  • Strong testing mindset and care for reliability, maintainability and correctness
  • Experience running your own code in production, including monitoring, logging, alerting, debugging or incident investigation
  • Ability to explain technical decisions clearly in English
  • Low ego, curious, collaborative and eager to learn
  • Practical interest in AI tools and modern engineering productivity

Nice to have

  • Experience with payments, fintech, banking, billing, invoicing, marketplaces, e-commerce or other transaction-heavy domains
  • Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, SNS, Pub/Sub, DynamoDB, retries, DLQs, idempotency or duplicate processing
  • Experience with systems where data correctness, auditability, security or recovery are important
  • Experience with AWS serverless, Lambda, ECS, DynamoDB, SQS, Terraform or CI/CD
  • Some mentoring, onboarding, design-review or technical-guidance experience

What is offered

  • Salary up to €85.000 + €20.000 stock option package
  • Indefinite contract from day one
  • 25 holidays
  • Excellent pension
  • Flexible working hours
  • Working from home options, with around 3 office days in Amsterdam
  • Travel expense reimbursement
  • Laptop or MacBook
  • Beautiful office with free parking options
  • Structured feedback and active mentorship
  • Opportunity to learn from senior, principal and lead backend engineers
  • International team with more than 30 nationalities
  • Strong social culture and collaborative engineering environment
  • Clear growth path towards senior, lead or principal backend engineering
  • Long-term product environment focused on quality, ownership and technical depth
