We have an exciting opportunity for an Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) / VDI Engineer to support a Texas state agency. This position will serve as a subject matter expert responsible for the design, deployment, administration, and support of a secure, scalable, and high-performing Azure Virtual Desktop environment. The successful candidate will work closely with infrastructure, security, application, and project teams to ensure virtual desktop solutions align with agency business objectives, compliance requirements, and industry best practices. Cross-training and knowledge transfer to current staff will be an important responsibility of this role.


The Candidate must have experience in and be able to perform the following:

  • Design, deploy, configure, and manage Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments, including host pools, session hosts, application groups, and workspaces.
  • Administer and optimize VDI infrastructure to ensure high availability, performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Implement and manage Azure services supporting AVD, including Azure Active Directory, Azure Storage, Azure Networking, Azure Monitor, and Log Analytics.
  • Apply networking expertise including DNS, TCP/IP, VPNs, ExpressRoute, NSGs, firewalls, and application traffic flow requirements.
  • Configure and document firewall rules, ports, and network connectivity requirements for virtual desktop environments.
  • Implement security best practices including identity and access management, endpoint hardening, encryption, compliance monitoring, and zero-trust principles.
  • Monitor environments for security threats and vulnerabilities and collaborate with security teams to remediate risks.
  • Manage Windows Server operating systems and their integration with Azure-based workloads.
  • Utilize SCCM/OSD and Microsoft Intune/AutoPilot for desktop provisioning, patch management, configuration management, and lifecycle support.
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize standard operating environment (SOE) images and golden image templates.
  • Create and maintain automation solutions using PowerShell, Python, or equivalent scripting languages.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to VDI performance, connectivity, application delivery, and user experience.
  • Monitor environment health and performance metrics and implement proactive improvements to increase stability and reduce incidents.
  • Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to design and implement virtual desktop solutions aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Prepare technical documentation, architecture diagrams, operational procedures, and knowledge transfer materials.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, project planning, change management activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3–6 years of hands-on experience in IT Infrastructure, Systems Engineering, Cloud Engineering, or related technical roles.
  • 3+ years of experience deploying, configuring, administering, and supporting Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments in production environments.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure services including Azure Active Directory, Azure Networking, Azure Storage, Azure Monitor, and related cloud technologies.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies including Azure Virtual Desktop, Hyper-V, VMware, or comparable platforms.
  • Strong networking experience with DNS, TCP/IP, VPNs, ExpressRoute, NSGs, firewalls, and network security design.
  • Experience supporting Windows Server environments and Azure-integrated workloads.
  • Experience with SCCM/OSD and Microsoft Intune/AutoPilot for endpoint management, provisioning, patching, and configuration.
  • Experience implementing VDI security controls, identity management, endpoint protection, and data security best practices.
  • Strong PowerShell scripting skills with experience automating administrative and operational processes.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex cloud, networking, application delivery, and virtual desktop issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience preparing technical documentation, operational runbooks, and knowledge transfer materials.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative, cross-functional team environments.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104).
  • Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty Certification.
  • Experience supporting government, public sector, or highly regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, NIST, and FISMA.
  • Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and other observability and monitoring platforms.
  • Experience with Azure Site Recovery, backup technologies, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Knowledge of Zero Trust security architecture and cloud security frameworks.
  • Experience working within multi-vendor or multi-service provider delivery models.
