Lead Robotics/Controls Engineer

Our client is a well-funded medical robotics company transforming laboratory workflows in the diagnostics space. Their mission centers on improving patient care by increasing efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing the quality and consistency of laboratory processes. The company's product portfolio includes electro-mechanical automation systems that address critical, historically manual steps in the histology/pathology workflow — bringing greater precision, throughput, and reliability to laboratories.

The team spans engineering, data science, robotics, healthcare innovation, and laboratory operations, with R&D driving a strong pipeline of new solutions and an ISO-certified in-house manufacturing operation ensuring production quality.

Role Summary

The Embedded Controls Engineer will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team — mechanical, electrical, and optics engineers — to provide software tools that streamline medical device development. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role covering the design, development, and testing of device control software at both the driver and application level. We're looking for someone with deep embedded systems and real-time programming experience who views medical device development as a genuine competitive advantage — and who works well as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software for a robotic system that automates a laboratory diagnostic process
  • Design algorithms to control a multi-component mechatronic system based on software requirements
  • Write production-level code released to a marketable medical device
  • Develop real-time, feedback control loops
  • Build interfaces between mechanical and software components (e.g., motor controllers, cameras, actuators)
  • Create simulations of the robotic system for testing purposes

Must-Haves

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical, Aerospace, Biomedical, or Electrical Engineering (or related field)
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in medical devices, automotive, aerospace, or industrial control applications
  • Experience with high-fidelity control loops
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python
  • Comfort working in a Linux environment
  • Experience with Git or other code repository systems
  • Solid foundation in the TCP/IP protocol stack
  • Understanding of multithreading and real-time systems
  • Experience with PID-based control for motion and/or temperature control
  • Knowledge of hardware communication interfaces: Ethernet, Serial, SPI, I2C
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus
  • Robotics platform experience (ROS or YARP) is a plus
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and modern software development/deployment best practices
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Drive and determination to hit aggressive milestones and deadlines
