Introductory information
This thesis investigates how depth information can be integrated as an additional geometric constraint into a COLMAP-based calibration pipeline. The goal is to improve camera-to-camera and camera-to-LiDAR extrinsic calibration by combining image-based reconstruction with depth consistency. A key part of the work is the design and evaluation of a custom loss function for depth-augmented calibration.
Depending on the achieved results, this thesis may contribute to a scientific publication in computer vision, robotics, or autonomous systems.
Your Role
- Develop and evaluate a depth-augmented COLMAP-based calibration approach.
- Design a geometric loss that combines reprojection error with depth consistency.
- Compare the method against standard image-only calibration.
- Evaluate robustness under challenging conditions such as low texture, small overlap, dynamic objects, or noisy depth data.
- Good programming skills in C++ or Python, and willingness to work with both.
- Interest in computer vision, 3D reconstruction, and sensor calibration.
- Familiarity with Linux-based development environments.
- Basic understanding of camera geometry.
- First experience with COLMAP or similar 3D reconstruction tools.
- Basic experience with OpenCV, point clouds, or numerical optimization.
- Interest in multi-sensor calibration and real-world sensor data.
