We are looking for: Engineering Project Lead

The Engineering Project Lead is a senior leadership role spanning the full product lifecycle from concept through series production. The EPL owns end-to-end project delivery for NAD development programmes, driving cross-functional alignment across Hardware (HW), Software (SW), Hardware Testing (HT), System Testing (ST), and Supplier Quality Management (SQM). The role serves as the primary interface to tier-1 OEM supplier customers and is accountable for schedule, budget, risk, and quality outcomes.

Main responsibilities:

Project Planning & Execution

  • Own end-to-end project planning for new R&D and series development programmes, covering design phase, trial production, homologation/type approval (GCF, PTCRB, carrier certifications), and handover to production and quality.
  • Define, maintain, and track the project master schedule using appropriate tooling (e.g. MS Project, JIRA/Confluence); ensure milestone gate reviews align with customer-specific phase-gate models (e.g. VW PEP, BMW SOP gates, or equivalent).
  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams spanning HW, SW, HT, ST, SQM, and Industrial Engineering throughout the project lifecycle.

Risk & Issue Management

  • Identify, assess, and communicate project risks proactively; maintain a live risk register with mitigation measures and contingency plans.
  • Escalate critical issues promptly, mobilise the necessary resources to resolve them, and monitor corrective actions through to closure.

Organisational Context

The CPM and EPL work as a complementary pair on each customer programme:

  • EPL = internal project owner: owns the development schedule, cross-functional team coordination, and internal deliverables.
  • CPM = external project owner: owns the customer relationship, external schedule alignment, commercial topics, and all customer-facing communication.

Quality & Process Compliance

  • Support the Project Quality Manager (PQM) and Industrial Engineering Lead in preparing PPAP and APQP deliverables in line with IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, and customer-specific quality requirements.
  • Ensure project execution follows the company quality management system and applicable automotive standards; drive continuous improvement through structured lessons-learned sessions at project close-out.

Departmental Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with CPM/PDM to support customer project in best manner
  • Prepare and deliver regular status reports, phase-result summaries, and milestone achievement documentation to both internal management and external customers
  • Supervise the implementation of departmental sub-plans; facilitate cross-team communication and resolve inter-department dependencies.
  • Coordinate and chair project wrap-up activities, including retrospectives and lessons-learned documentation feeding into the QMS knowledge base.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
  • PMP, IPMA, or equivalent project management certification is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of automotive NAD, telematics, or wireless module development, including cellular connectivity (LTE/5G), GNSS, and ideally V2X.
  • Familiarity with homologation and type-approval processes (GCF, PTCRB, carrier acceptance).
  • Working knowledge of automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet / SOME-IP) and embedded hardware/software design processes.
  • Understanding of Functional Safety concepts (ISO 26262) at system level is advantageous.
  • Proficient knowledge of the automotive quality framework: IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP, VDA 6.3, FMEA (AIAG-VDA).
  • Experience with customer-specific requirements from major OEMs or tier-1 suppliers (e.g. Volkswagen Group, BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz, Harman, Bosch, or similar).
  • Proven track record of leading complex multi-disciplinary hardware/software development projects from concept to series production.
  • Proficiency with project management and ALM tooling, e.g. MS Project, JIRA, Confluence, Polarion, or DOORS.
  • Strong ability to manage schedule, budget, resource, and risk simultaneously across geographically distributed teams.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in a highly technical, cross-cultural environment.
  • Fluent English (mandatory); German is strongly preferred for a Kronach-based role; Mandarin Chinese is a significant advantage given team composition.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and align multi-cultural teams across time zones.
  • Quick learner able to grasp key technical principles and adopt new tools rapidly.

What do we have to offer you?

  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonuses
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Supportive team culture with strong leadership
