2- Job description and responsibilities

TTA is seeking a Data and programming engineer to join the Knowledge and Innovation (KI) Unit of TTA, supporting R+D Project Managers, and taking on programming and documentation activities. The nature of projects will be related to the monitoring of distributed renewable energy (DRE)-based solutions.

TTA has developed an open-source digital platform for remote monitoring DRE solar installations. The system has two main components: remote data collection (hardware) and data reception and processing (software), integrated to facilitate data flow. Each component has its own architecture.

The Data and programming engineer will work mainly on the following tasks:

  1. Programming IoT platforms: working with open-source code and frameworks, understanding their architecture, contributing to their development, and prototyping. Develop and deploy code for embedded systems, cloud platforms, and communication protocols relevant to IoT.
  2. Technical documentation: develop documentation and consolidate TTA’s technical knowledge through the development of the digital remote monitoring platform for DRE. This includes the architecture at both software and hardware levels and contributing to the overall technical knowledge base within TTA for this platform as well as other ongoing R&D initiatives.
  3. Integration support: assess and support the integration of DRE and solar mini-grids with the monitoring platform, including connections, communication protocols and monitored variables.
  4. Data analysis: conduct analysis of data gathered by different monitoring platforms, including performance metrics, error logs, and sensor readings. Extract actionable insights to inform decision-making and contribute to the enhancement of the platform's functionalities for the overall efficiency of solar installations. Lead the development of a database of monitored projects from different platforms. This analysis will also inform broader R&D efforts and identify areas for innovation in DRE systems.
  5. R&D project participation: actively participate in other assigned R&D projects, contribute to research, development, testing and documentation for new technologies, systems, or methodologies within TTA's scope of work in renewable energy and control systems.

The R&D Industrial Engineer Analyst will also:

  1. Give support to project management activities.
  2. Travel to project sites when required (less than 10% of field work expected). Projects of the KI team may take place in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region.

The ideal candidate for this position must have the following competencies*:

  1. Educational background. A degree in Electrical, Electronic, Industrial, Computer Science, Telecommunications engineering, or a similar field is required. A master’s degree is desirable but NOT mandatory.
  2. Previous work experience. 1 to 4 years of experience in digital platforms, software development, IoT systems, monitoring systems or similar. Experience in digital solutions projects involving renewable energies desirable.
  3. Languages. Fluency in Catalan and English, especially written skills, is required.
  4. Technical skills:
  • Knowledge of IoT platforms, data acquisition devices, and familiarity with communication protocols.
  • Understanding of programming concepts and environments, software development lifecycle in languages like JavaScript, Pyhton and familiarity with flow-based programming tools such as Node-RED. Experience with open-source coding practices.
  • Knowledge in hardware development (processing units, sensors, communication modules).
  • Experience with database manipulation, ensuring structured data handling for efficient information management and access.
  • Strong skills in writing technical and functional documentation, data visualization, including APIs, software architecture, and data models.
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are required.
  • Other skills. such as the ability to work with minimum supervision and multiple project tasks simultaneously; cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to communicate efficiently with the project managers, partners, and clients; and familiarity with the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including awareness of data confidentiality, ethical considerations, and opportunities to enhance analytical workflows.
