Department: Data

Reports To: Director of Data & Engineering

Summary

We're looking for a skilled and motivated Data/Systems Engineer to join a small, fast-moving Data and Engineering team at Moxie Pest Control. You'll bring solid data and systems engineering fundamentals to help ramp up on our tech stack, working closely with and learning directly from the engineers on the team. This is a hands-on role with real ownership and a clear path to grow.

A core focus of this position is helping advance our systems automation — using data pipelines, Python, and AI agents to remove manual, repetitive work across all portions of the company.

Responsibilities

  • Python Scripting and Automation:
    • Use Python for data manipulation, task automation, and integration with internal and external data platforms and APIs.
    • Develop and maintain Python scripts for ETL/ELT processes that move and transform data across systems.
    • Build Python-based automations that remove manual steps from data and business workflows.
    • Add automated testing and basic auditing to the data solutions you build.
  • Automation and AI Agents:
    • Partner with teams across the company to spot manual, repetitive work and design automations that streamline or eliminate it.
    • As you learn the business, grow into designing and building automations and AI agents that create end-to-end, low-touch processes.
    • Help us build out our automation and AI capabilities on Anthropic's platform — we're early here, so curiosity and a willingness to experiment matter more than a long track record.
    • Establish sensible standards, monitoring, and guardrails so automations and agents stay accurate, secure, and maintainable.
  • Data Pipeline Development:
    • Build and maintain data pipelines using Dagster to integrate data from a variety of sources.
    • Help ensure pipelines are reliable, efficient, and scalable, with an emphasis on modular, reusable code.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to pipeline performance and data quality.
    • Contribute to monitoring and alerting for pipeline health and data accuracy.
  • SQL Server:
    • Work within our SQL Server environment — writing and optimizing queries and supporting day-to-day database work.
    • Help identify areas for improvement, targeting long-running queries and high resource consumption in production.
    • Support data integrity, security, and availability, growing toward greater ownership of database work over time.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with the Business Intelligence team where pipelines feed Power BI and our Microsoft Fabric environment (owned by BI), keeping those handoffs clean.
    • Collaborate with teams across the company to understand their data needs and deliver solutions that fit.
    • Document your designs, processes, and solutions, and keep your work tracked — priorities here can shift quickly, so staying organized matters.
Requirements

Job Requirements

  • 1 - 3 years of experience in data/systems engineering or a closely related software or automation role.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related field — or equivalent practical, on the job experience.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, including data manipulation libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy).
  • Solid working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining data pipelines with an orchestration tool such as Dagster or Apache Airflow.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a small team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to, or strong interest in, building AI agents and automations (e.g., LLM-based agent frameworks or workflow automation).
  • Experience with SQL Server specifically, including performance tuning and stored procedures.
  • Familiarity with the following Azure services; such as Azure SQL / SQL Server, Function Apps, and Key Vault.
  • Understanding of data modeling concepts (e.g., relational, dimensional) and data warehousing principles.
  • Experience integrating APIs into production automations.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines for data solutions.
  • Knowledge of data security best practices and compliance standards.

Nice To Have Qualifications

  • Exposure to Anthropic's platform (Claude Developer Platform) or other agent frameworks and prompt engineering.
  • Experience with other database systems (e.g., Postgres, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, AlloyDB).
  • Experience with other cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud).
  • Familiarity with data science concepts and machine learning workflows.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric or Power BI (you'll partner with our BI team on these).
