Principal Software Engineer – CAM Studio (Onshape)

Hybrid – Boston, MA (2–3 days/week)

About the Role

PTC’s Onshape CAM Studio team is building modern, cloudnative CAM capabilities integrated directly into a SaaS‑based CAD platform. CAM Studio enables users to go from design to manufacturing within a single, connected system.

We are looking for a strong software engineer to join the CAM Studio team as an individual contributor. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working on technically complex, engineering‑heavy products and wants to contribute to the evolution of a mature CAM application using modern software practices.

This is not a greenfield role and not a machinist or CNC programmer role—you will be building and evolving the software behind a CAM system, not operating machines.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and maintain features within the CAM Studio application
  • Develop C#/.NETbased components and services supporting CAM workflows
  • Work within an Agile team to enhance an existing, production‑grade codebase
  • Collaborate with teammates on architecture, performance, and reliability improvements
  • Learn and apply modern SaaS and cloud concepts as CAM Studio continues to evolve

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Strong experience as a software engineer building and maintaining production systems
  • Proficiency in C# / .NET (desktop applications and/or services)
  • Experience working with large or mature codebases
  • Solid software engineering fundamentals, including:
  • Writing clean, maintainable code
  • Debugging and problem‑solving
  • Designing and implementing features end‑to‑end
  • Interest in or exposure to cloudbased or SaaS environments
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies and domains
  • US Citizen or GC holder requirement due to ITAR specifications.
  • Ability to commute to Boston Seaport office 2-3 days a week
  • Experience with CAD, CAM, manufacturing, or industrial software

Familiarity with:

  • Toolpath generation, CAM engines, or post processors
  • Simulation, verification, or geometry‑related problem spaces
  • Exposure to:
  • Microservices or service‑oriented architectures
  • Kubernetes or containerized environments
  • RESTful APIs
  • Background in mechanical engineering, applied math, or a related technical field paired with strong software skills

Important Clarification

We are seeking software engineers who build CAM software, not CAM users or machine operators.

If your experience is primarily using CAM tools to program CNC machines, this role is likely not a fit.

Level & Growth

  • This role is open at the Senior or Principal level, depending on experience
  • Level is flexible and will be determined based on skills, impact, and growth potential
  • Engineers with strong fundamentals and a desire to grow into broader technical leadership are encouraged to apply

Work Environment & Benefits

  • Hybrid work model: Boston office 2–3 days per week
  • Collaborative team with experienced engineers and opportunities for mentorship
