Software Engineer in Test

The Role

As an SDET 2, you are an automation engineer first. You independently design test strategies, build and maintain Playwright-based automation solutions, and take accountability for the quality signal on assigned features and modules without requiring day-to-day direction. Your test code is held to the same standard as production code: readable, maintainable, and reliable.

Manual testing remains part of the role—particularly for exploratory coverage, complex domain scenarios, and release regression—but your distinguishing contribution is the growing automated test suite you build and the quality infrastructure improvements you drive that make the whole QA team more effective.

What You’ll Do

Test Automation & Frameworks

• Design, implement, and maintain reliable Playwright-based end-to-end and integration test suites for assigned modules, written to a production engineering standard—not fragile scripts that require constant attention after a feature ships.

• Apply and extend established automation patterns: page object design, test data management, helper library usage, and CI/CD integration—raising suggestions for pattern improvements when recurring problems indicate a structural gap.

• Expand the automated regression suite incrementally every sprint: identifying the highest-value manual test cases that are strong automation candidates and implementing them to a standard the QA Lead considers production-ready.

• Build and maintain API-level test coverage where appropriate, understanding when direct API testing provides better coverage than UI-driven tests—particularly for data pipeline integrity and background job behavior.

• Diagnose and resolve flaky automation at the root cause rather than masking instability with waits or retries.

CI/CD & Pipeline Integration

• Maintain automated test workflows in GitHub Actions and Azure Pipelines, ensuring tests are fast, reliable, and integrated at every stage of delivery.

• Work within Azure DevOps Test Plans to manage test cases, track execution results, and contribute to quality metrics across releases.

• Distinguish genuine application defects from pipeline or environment issues and contribute pipeline improvements when the current configuration creates friction.

Data & Platform Testing

• Write queries against Azure SQL to construct and validate test data, verify data pipeline integrity, and support API-level assertions against the application’s data layer.

• Build test coverage for background job behavior: understanding how Hangfire jobs are triggered and monitored, how the import pipeline stages data, and how to use the Ops Portal to set up and reset test environments.

• Maintain working knowledge of platform internals relevant to effective testing: distributed service execution, import trigger chain sequencing, site configuration, and Azure application logs.

AI Feature Testing

• Contribute to test strategies for AI-driven application features, including prompt validation, response quality evaluation, behavioral boundary testing, and regression detection for non-deterministic outputs.

• Collaborate with product and development engineers to define acceptance criteria and observable quality signals for AI-powered features.

• Build test cases and harnesses that make AI feature quality measurable and repeatable over time.

Quality Contribution & Collaboration

• Mentor SDET 1s through code review, test plan review, and direct technical guidance—building their independence and capability, not just correcting their immediate work.

• Identify and document defect patterns: recognizing when multiple defects share a root cause or systemic coverage gap and raising these findings to the QA Lead rather than treating each instance in isolation.

• Participate in sprint ceremonies with substance: contributing informed estimates, raising testability concerns before implementation begins, and engaging in retrospectives with specific proposals.

• Contribute to the test case library, automation documentation, and runbooks for test environment setup so that SDET 1s can operate independently.

What We’re Looking For

Required Experience

• 3–5 years of professional software testing experience with demonstrated hands-on test automation delivery.

• Proficiency in Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, or a comparable UI automation framework; ability to design, build, and maintain reliable automated test suites independently.

• Hands-on experience authoring pipelines in GitHub Actions and Azure Pipelines.

• Experience with Azure DevOps Test Plans for test case management, execution tracking, and reporting.

• Working knowledge of SQL sufficient to write queries for test data setup and result validation against Azure SQL or SQL Server.

• Working programming proficiency in C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python—sufficient to write and maintain automation code to a production engineering standard.

• Solid understanding of web application architecture: how browser-based applications interact with APIs and backend services, and how to use that understanding to design more effective tests.

• Demonstrated ability to design test coverage from requirements and acceptance criteria independently, without waiting for test plans to be provided.

• Active use of AI coding assistants (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) as a standard part of the automation development workflow.

Strongly Preferred

• Experience working in an Atlassian (Jira, Jira Service Management, Confluence) environment.

• Experience testing enterprise SaaS applications with complex domain logic—supply chain, ERP, financial, or operations software where correctness requires understanding what the numbers mean.

• Hands-on experience using Claude Code as a development accelerator—leveraging AI-assisted tooling to generate test scaffolding, accelerate test authoring, analyze coverage gaps, or automate repetitive QA tasks.

• Familiarity with API testing tools (Postman, RestSharp, or comparable) and experience building API-level test coverage alongside UI automation.

• Exposure to performance testing tooling (JMeter, k6, or comparable).

• Familiarity with .NET Core application architecture, Hangfire background job management, or Azure App Services in a testing context.
