Application Architect
Indexed description
We’re partnering with a well-established, NZ-based technology consultancy delivering work that genuinely matters: long-term modernisation, high-trust customer relationships, and a programme of work measured in years, not sprints.
This is a hands-on Application Architect role sitting close to engineering. You’ll be shaping how a sizeable Microsoft application ecosystem evolves setting direction, creating clarity, and helping teams modernise sensibly (without breaking what’s already in market).
To be clear: this is not an “enterprise platform / cloud landing zone” architecture gig. It’s about the application layer design, patterns, integrations, code quality, and long-term maintainability.
What You’ll Bring
You’ll be embedded in delivery, working closely with engineering teams and senior customer stakeholders. At times you’ll be shaping the target-state architecture and aligning squads around clear patterns and principles; at others, you’ll be diagnosing legacy constraints, defining pragmatic integration approaches, and providing hands-on guidance to improve design and delivery practices.
You’ll bring the credibility to influence technical direction, the stakeholder maturity to build alignment across diverse audiences, and the pragmatism to drive incremental improvement in complex, live environments balancing architectural intent with delivery momentum and risk management.
What You’ll Be Doing
Setting and evolving application architecture across a broad .NET ecosystem (legacy through to modern)
- Designing API and integration patterns that keep teams moving and systems stable
- Creating clear, versioned contracts so frontend teams (Angular) can build with confidence
- Bringing structure to modernisation: what to tackle first, what can wait, and how to reduce risk
- Lifting engineering standards: clean architecture/DDD thinking, testing, CI/CD, code quality habits
- Facilitating workshops, guiding squads, and being the calm technical voice in customer conversations
- Mentoring engineers and emerging architects — leaving teams stronger than you found them
- Step into new environments quickly
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Balance “best practice” with real-world constraints
- Influence without relying on authority
- Deep experience across .NET Framework and modern .NET
- Proven application modernisation experience in production environments
- Strong API design and integration experience (REST and messaging; governance mindset)
- Comfort partnering with frontend teams (Angular preferred)
- Azure-hosted application experience (common PaaS services and integration tooling)
- A practical security mindset (auth, secure API design, secrets management)
- A long-term programme where architecture decisions actually stick
- Work that blends strategy + delivery (not “ivory tower”)
- A team that values clarity, craft, and building capability
