Position Overview:
The Trade Compliance Analyst is responsible for supporting Magna Powertrain's North American trade compliance program by ensuring adherence to U.S., Canadian, and international customs regulations governing the importation and exportation of goods. This role serves as a key Subject Matter Expert (SME) for customs brokerage operations, import compliance, and customs entry processes, partnering closely with internal stakeholders, customs brokers, suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers to facilitate compliant and efficient cross-border transactions.
The Trade Compliance Analyst will coordinate and support customs compliance activities for Magna Powertrain manufacturing facilities throughout North America. This position is responsible for reviewing and validating customs documentation, providing brokerage support, mitigating compliance risks, and ensuring timely and accurate customs declarations to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and other relevant government authorities.
Working as part of the Magna Powertrain Trade Compliance team, the Analyst will assist in maintaining a robust compliance framework by supporting customs audits, broker management processes, trade agreement qualification activities, and continuous improvement initiatives designed to enhance operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the process owner for the Broker Referral Program, ensuring the timely collection, validation, and communication of critical import data to customs brokers to support and ensure accurate and compliant customs entry filings for MPT’s import transactions.
Research, assign, and maintain Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classifications for imported products, components, and materials, ensuring classifications are accurate, defensible, and aligned with regulatory requirements. Conduct periodic reviews and updates of the HTS database to reflect changes in customs regulations and rulings.
Identify and support duty optimization opportunities through the application of Free Trade Agreements (e.g., USMCA/CUSMA, KORUS), special trade programs, and HTSUS provisions such as 9801 and 9802, including supplier solicitation, qualification as needed.
Partner with Supply Chain, Purchasing, Finance, Engineering, and Manufacturing teams to perform duty impact analyses, supporting sourcing decisions, cost-reduction initiatives, and landed cost calculations.
Execute and manage internal audits of import transactions to evaluate customs broker compliance with Magna’s Broker Business Rules, while reviewing broker-prepared entries for accuracy in valuation, classification, country of origin, and other critical data elements to ensure full regulatory compliance.
Provide operational support for import and export shipment activities including hand-carry, import/export issue resolution and status reporting, management of Temporary Import Bond (TIB) process by determining applicability, ensuring proper tracking, and coordinating extensions as needed.
Support MPT’s customs broker management activities by assisting with POAs, bonds, and adherence to SOPs, ensuring alignment with internal compliance standards.
Coordinate and support post-entry compliance activities, including Post Summary Corrections (PSCs), protests, prior disclosures, CBP’s requests for information and action (CF28/CF29) responses, reconciliations, and other customs-related corrective actions.
Generate, analyze, and distribute trade compliance metrics, dashboards, and reporting tools using ACE data, broker reports, and other compliance systems to support risk management and decision-making.
Provide operational support to MPT facilities participating in the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) program, including security-related compliance activities and audit preparation.
Determine and maintain HTS classifications for non-production materials, MRO purchases, capital equipment, prototypes, and indirect commodities, ensuring ongoing compliance through periodic classification reviews.
Support the deployment and continuous improvement of trade compliance technologies, automation tools, and digital solutions to enhance operational efficiency, data integrity, and regulatory compliance.
Lead the development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven trade compliance solutions to automate classification analysis, free trade agreement (FTA) qualification reviews, denied party screening, and customs documentation processes, improving accuracy, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Customs Compliance, IT, Supply Chain, Purchasing, and Data Analytics) to identify, prioritize, and implement AI initiatives that enhance trade data quality, reduce compliance risk, and support global import/export operations.
Monitor, validate, and optimize AI models and automation tools by establishing performance metrics, conducting compliance-focused testing, and ensuring alignment with customs regulations, customer requirements, and internal control standards.
Serve as a trusted advisor to business stakeholders by providing day-to-day guidance and decision support on customs and international trade compliance matters.
Support special projects, continuous improvement initiatives, regulatory audits, and other trade compliance activities as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, International Business, Business Administration, Logistics, Customs Administration, or a related field preferred.
Minimum 5 years of experience in customs compliance, international trade, import/export operations, or customs brokerage, preferably within the automotive manufacturing industry.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational skills, communication skills and stakeholder management abilities, with attention to detail.
Proficiency with ERP systems (SAP preferred), customs management systems, and Microsoft Office applications, including Microsoft Excel, and Power BI development highly desired.
Demonstrate expertise in U.S. and Canadian customs and trade regulations, including 19 CFR, and related import compliance requirements, with advanced knowledge of customs valuation, country of origin determinations, and Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification principles.
Thorough understanding of the HTSUS and Canadian Customs Tariff, with proven ability to develop, support, and defend accurate tariff classifications for Magna Powertrain products and components.
Experience with USMCA/CUSMA qualification process and compliance requirements, knowledge and understanding of other Customs special trade programs (HTSUS 9801/9802) and documentary requirements.
Working knowledge of tariff classification, customs valuation, country of origin determination, and duty minimization strategies.
Experience working with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and third-party logistics providers.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Understand country of origin and marking issues, recordkeeping requirements, and supply chain security regulations as they relate to imports.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally, approximately 10% of the time.
Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) designation or progress toward certification.
Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Certified Trade Compliance Specialist (CTCS) designation.

Work Environment
Office envrionment, 10% travel required.
While working in this envrionment, the employee will be exposed to machinery, moving equipment, and material, moderate noise, airborne particles, fumes, and various levels of temperature created by manufacturing processes.
