Senior Python Engineer | Gen AI & Harness Engineering

My client, an innovative business in the energy sector, is looking for a Senior Python Engineer to help shape its Generative AI capability.

As the company continues to build a modern data platform, it is investing in AI to accelerate software delivery, unlock greater value from data, and enable intelligent automation. A key focus of this role is Harness Engineering, designing and building the shared AI tooling, frameworks, and infrastructure that enable developers across the business to build, test, and deploy AI solutions quickly, securely, and at scale. Alongside this, you'll develop production AI applications and help define the company's broader AI engineering capability.

What you'll do

• Lead the development of the company's AI Harness Engineering capability, building reusable frameworks, SDKs, orchestration layers, and developer tooling.
• Design and develop AI powered applications using Python and modern Large Language Models.
• Build AI platform capabilities including prompt management, model routing, evaluation, observability, guardrails, and governance.
• Create scalable patterns for Retrieval Augmented Generation, AI agents, workflow automation, and tool integration.
• Develop APIs and platform services that simplify AI adoption across the organisation.
• Work closely with data, platform, and software engineering teams to integrate AI into the company's modern data platform.
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and establish engineering standards, architectural patterns, and best practices.

What you'll bring

• Strong commercial experience developing software in Python (minimum 5 years experience)
• Experience building Generative AI applications using Large Language Models.
• Experience with Harness Engineering, developer platforms, internal tooling, or shared engineering frameworks.
• Practical experience with frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, or similar.
• Strong understanding of Retrieval Augmented Generation, embeddings, vector search, AI agents, prompt engineering, and model evaluation.
• Experience building APIs, cloud native applications, and shared engineering services.
• Familiarity with Docker, Git, CI/CD, and modern software engineering practices.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple engineering teams.

Desirable

• Experience building enterprise AI platforms or developer enablement tooling.
• Experience with FastAPI or similar Python frameworks.
• Experience with vector databases and semantic search technologies.
• Knowledge of AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Experience with Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, or MLOps tooling.
• Understanding of AI governance, security, and responsible AI.
