Mathematical Optimization Engineer

We are looking for a Mathematical Optimization Engineer for discrete optimization to join our team.

As a Mathematical Optimization Engineer at Lufthansa Systems Hungária, you will be collaborating with software engineers and fellow specialists to enhance our crew optimization solutions.

In this role, you will work with different customers and translate their airline crew scheduling requirements into customized rules, and design algorithms to solve their sophisticated mathematical models effectively.

Beyond tackling algorithmic challenges, a substantial part of your role will involve the creation and maintenance of robust software systems required to execute and calibrate these algorithms efficiently.

You will be responsible for ensuring that our systems adhere to our software engineering standards, and you will gain a comprehensive understanding of crew scheduling processes to identify and implement opportunities for improvement.

Your responsibilities will be

• Further development of existing optimization components of the airline management system Netline/Crew or Netline Scheduling area.
• Implement and experiment on new and efficient optimization approaches.
• Recording customer requirements for the commissioning of existing optimization components.
• Development of customer-specific rules.
• Calibration of existing optimization components in close coordination with the customer, e.g., in benchmarks or implementation projects.
• Preparing and giving specialist presentations at internal and external events, e.g., delivering benchmark results to customers, running workshops with customers.
• Developing and sharing technical know-how.
• Implementing new features, writing code that adheres to our software engineering standards.

You are looking for us, if you have

• Subject-related studies (with a focus in computer science, mathematics, business mathematics, operations research) and ideally several years of professional experience.
• Knowledge of various optimization methods in the field of discrete optimization, e.g. combinatorial optimization, linear programming, constraint programming.
• Several years of practical experience in dealing with various optimization methods, preferably in the field of personnel resource planning or column generation.
• Solid knowledge of the programming language Python, Linux environment and GitHub.
• Passionate about software quality and design.
• High level of commitment and initiative, high resilience and pronounced flexibility.
• Good communication skills and assertiveness as well as a strong customer and service orientation.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in order to solve complex problems in depth.
• Ability and willingness to discuss ideas with the team and community.
• Very good written and spoken English skills.
• Interest in running complex optimization processes in a cloud environment.
