Lead DevOps Engineer
Indexed description
Build and operate the infrastructure behind Praetorian's autonomous defence systems — deployed on-premises and at the edge.
About Praetorian
Praetorian Aeronautics builds advanced autonomous aerial systems designed to protect and defend against the rapidly evolving threat of drone warfare. Headquartered in Adelaide, and with offices in Melbourne and Darwin, we're building an integrated ecosystem of counter-autonomy systems — Arrow, Dagger, Hadrian and Venator — that let defence operators detect, assess and defeat autonomous threats while maintaining situational dominance in contested environments.
This role sits across all four systems, building the infrastructure that gets our software running reliably in the field.
The Role
Our systems run on-prem and at the edge — on hardware in vehicles, ground stations, and test ranges, not in a cloud data centre. As a DevOps Engineer, you'll build and maintain the CI/CD pipelines, deployment tooling, and infrastructure that get Rust and Python software from commit to field-ready reliably and repeatably, working closely with engineers across autonomy, robotics, and command-and-control teams to keep systems observable, testable, and deployable in disconnected or bandwidth-constrained environments.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for software deployed to embedded and on-prem hardware
- Design infrastructure-as-code and configuration management for non-cloud, edge, and air-gapped environments
- Set up monitoring, logging, and observability across distributed field and lab systems
- Work with engineers to package, version, and deploy software reliably to physical hardware
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years experience in DevOps, platform, or infrastructure engineering
- Strong experience with on-prem or edge infrastructure — this is not a cloud-native role
- Proficiency with Linux systems administration and networking fundamentals
- Experience with containerisation and configuration management tools
- Comfort working close to hardware, with limited or no cloud tooling to fall back on
Nice to Have
- Experience with Linux, Nix or cross-platform system development
- Experience with air-gapped, classified, or disconnected network environments
- Experience with GPS-denied communication
- Experience with Rust or Python
- Background in defence, aerospace, or robotics environments
Benefits
- Competitive salary and employee share option plan (ESOP)
- Work on advanced autonomy and defence technology
- Join a small, highly technical engineering team
- Real ownership and influence as Praetorian scales
- Professional development and learning opportunities
