DevOps / FinOps Engineer
Indexed description
Key Responsibilities
- Reduce technical debt in infrastructure and deployment tooling and promote automation across the team;
- Support incident response and root cause analysis for platform reliability issues;
- Implement agreed cost optimisations directly or in collaboration with data engineers: cluster right-sizing, storage tier changes, scheduling adjustments and pipeline restructuring;
- Contribute to capacity planning and cloud budget forecasting alongside the IT Management Team;
- Analyse cost drivers and bring concrete optimisation options to data engineers and architects, with trade-off analysis and a clear recommendation;
- Build and maintain platform observability: monitoring dashboards, alerting and SLA tracking for the data platform;
- Support the Databricks migration by ensuring the new platform is provisioned and deployed through automated and repeatable processes;
- Monitor platform costs continuously: identify anomalies, attribute spend to workloads and maintain tagging and chargeback models;
- Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code for all data platform components on Azure;
- Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines for the data platform: infrastructure provisioning, environment promotion and deployment automation.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present cost and infrastructure trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders;
- A mindset focused on continuous improvement, automation over manual intervention and shared ownership of cloud spend.
- Previous experience in the energy, utilities or telcos sector is a plus (not mandatory);
- Experience with cloud cost analysis: identifying cost drivers, designing tagging strategies and building chargeback or showback models;
- Proven ability to propose and evaluate cost optimisation alternatives, being able to perform technical discussions with options and trade-offs, not just observations.
- Collaboration with external partners and internal stakeholders (technical and non-technical).
- Software Engineering (or similar).
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code: Terraform or Bicep;
- Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics or equivalent observability and alerting tooling;
- Python or Bash scripting for automation and platform tooling;
- Hands-on experience with Databricks on Azure: cluster management, job scheduling, cost optimisation and platform administration is a differentiator;
- Familiarity with Databricks-specific optimisation techniques: auto-scaling policies, spot instances, Delta Lake storage tuning and cost analysis via system tables;
- Awareness of FinOps frameworks and structured approaches to cloud financial management;
- Experience working on or alongside a data platform migration is a plus;
- Solid hands-on experience with Azure: compute, storage, networking, identity and cost management;
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and platform deployments.
