Application Modernisation Consultant

Help organisations untangle complex legacy environments, make pragmatic modernisation decisions, and deliver secure, scalable cloud-native solutions into production with confidence.

You will work on business-critical systems where architectural decisions have significant operational consequences.

This is likely to suit a senior engineer, architect, or technical consultant who wants to stay close to the technology while building credibility with engineering leaders, delivery teams, and business stakeholders.

What you’ll be responsible for...

• Designing secure, scalable and resilient cloud-native architectures
• Defining pragmatic modernisation pathways across refactoring, re-platforming, decomposition and selective replacement
• Breaking down monolithic applications into maintainable services, bounded domains and integration components
• Designing distributed, serverless, event-driven and microservices-based solutions
• Ensuring architecture decisions consider performance, security, reliability, cost and operational supportability
• Supporting the implementation of modernised applications rather than stopping at architecture or recommendations
• Working with containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
• Contributing to API, integration, database and service design
• Establishing automation, source control, infrastructure-as-code and repeatable delivery practices
• Leading technical discovery sessions with engineering, architecture and business stakeholders

What you’ll bring to the role...

• Your substantial experience across application modernisation, software engineering or cloud solution architecture
• Your experience designing and implementing complex enterprise systems
• Your knowledge of application modernisation strategies, including refactoring, re-platforming and decomposition
• Your experience with container technologies and orchestration platforms (e.g. Kubernetes, Docker, EKS, ECS, AKS, GKE or OpenShift) alongside tools such as Helm, Istio, Terraform, Argo CD, Prometheus or OpenTelemetry
• Your experience designing distributed, cloud-native systems using microservices, serverless computing and event-driven architecture patterns
• Your understanding of databases (e.g. SQL, NoSQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle)
• Your experience with automation, version control, infrastructure-as-code and modern software delivery practices
• Your ability to design and work with APIs and integration patterns (e.g. REST, GraphQL, gRPC)
• Your experience delivering cloud-native solutions (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
