Senior Software Engineer

Role Overview
As a Senior Software Engineer on our Pulse Core team, you will be a high-impact individual contributor helping accelerate the velocity of all City’s Experience product teams. You will work alongside a Tech Lead and Engineering Manager in a team that builds and maintains a robust, self-service developer platform and shared core services — and that embraces AI-assisted development as part of its daily workflow.
This is an execution-focused role — you will design, build, test, and own features end-to-end. You will contribute to architectural discussions and influence technical decisions, but the overall technical vision is owned by the Tech Lead. Your focus is on delivering high-quality, well-tested code at pace, and on growing your own skills in a team that is defining the future of how we build software.
What makes this a Senior Engineer role (not a Tech Lead role)
- You contribute to the technical vision and architecture — you don’t own it.
- You execute on the roadmap with a high degree of autonomy, but you are not jointly accountable for the team’s overall technical direction.
- You pair with and learn from the Tech Lead, and you mentor mid-level engineers — but uplifting the entire team’s practices is not your primary responsibility.
- You are expected to be self-directed — you can take a loosely defined problem, break it down, and deliver a well-tested solution with minimal guidance.
- Design and Build Features End-to-End: Take ownership of features from requirements through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring. You own what you build.
- Write High-Quality, Well-Tested Code: Deliver clean, maintainable code using TypeScript and JavaScript as our primary language focus, while maintaining and building backend services in Java/Kotlin (e.g., user management epics). Write comprehensive tests as a natural part of your workflow.
- Embrace AI-Assisted Development: Use generative AI tools (Claude, Cursor, Copilot) as part of your daily development workflow. You don't need to be a power-user from day one, but you should be enthusiastic about learning and growing your AI-assisted coding skills.
- Own Your Services in Production (DevOps/SRE): Embrace “You Build It, You Run It.” Fully own production deployment, incident resolution, monitoring, and alerting. Actively participate in on-call rotations and build with observability and resilience in mind from the start.
- Contribute to System Design & Infrastructure: Participate actively in design discussions and infrastructure planning. Help bridge the gap between our code and infrastructure across both cloud and on-premise solutions.
- Collaborate, Communicate & Mentor: Work closely with Product, Design, and your engineering peers. Support the growth of mid-level team members through pairing, code reviews, and knowledge-sharing.
- Strong Engineering Experience: 5–8 years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering complex features in production systems.
- Tech Stack Proficiency: Deep experience with TypeScript and JavaScript. Additionally, strong working knowledge of Java or Kotlin is required to confidently execute backend and user management epics.
- DevOps & SRE Expertise: Proven experience managing production deployments, configuring proactive monitoring and alerting systems, and resolving critical live incidents. Must be comfortable participating in on-call rotations.
- Infrastructure & Kubernetes: Solid understanding of both AWS cloud infrastructure and on-premise Kubernetes environment setups. Experience with IaC tools (like Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines (like GitHub Actions) is highly valued.
- System Design Competence: You can design and reason about scalable, distributed systems. You understand trade-offs and can articulate your design decisions clearly.
- Testing and Quality Mindset: You write unit, integration, and contract tests as a matter of course. Experience with quality tooling and robust CI/CD principles is expected.
- AI-Assisted Development Awareness: Familiarity with AI coding tools. A genuine enthusiasm to learn and adopt AI-first workflows is essential.
