The California Lottery is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise headquartered in Sacramento. It is one of the few state agencies that is a revenue generator, not accepting taxpayer dollars from the state’s general fund. Our mission is to provide supplemental funding to California schools while simultaneously supporting local communities. Ninety-five cents of every dollar spent by players goes back to local communities in the form of contributions to public schools and colleges, prizes and retailer compensation.
In fiscal year 2023-24, the California Lottery provided over $2 billion in supplemental funding for California public schools, bringing the total contributions to more than $46 billion since we began in 1985. Lottery products are sold at more than 23,000 retail locations throughout the state. Product offerings include an average of 52 fun and entertaining Scratchers games and several draw games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and SuperLotto Plus and daily games such as Fantasy 5 and Hot Spot.
Job Description and Duties:
Under general direction of the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) Web & Mobile Services (WMS), Information Technology Manager I, the Senior Software Tester is responsible for defining and executing testing architecture, requirements, designs, processes, and procedures related to solutions testing for new and existing Information Technology (IT) solutions for the California State Lottery (Lottery).
The Senior Software Tester provides technical leadership as the project lead for testing and debugging software using various programming tools and languages, and works with web and mobile stakeholders through the software development lifecycle to complete system, regression, smoke, and user acceptance testing.
The Senior Software Tester must have good written and verbal communication skills to efficiently maintain the organization of the workload. The duties for this position are focused in the Software Engineering domain; however, work may be assigned in other domains as needed.

Working Conditions:
The Senior Software Tester will work in a fast-paced environment, with competing priorities, and critical deliverables.
- Schedule: This supports the Lottery during normal business hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. unless otherwise approved by the unit manager. Weekends, long and/or irregular hours, after-hours work, and holiday work may be required.
- Travel: Statewide overnight travel may be required.
- Other: This position may be required to carry a Lottery issued cell phone. This position may be required to be reachable outside of normal business hours
Desirable Qualifications
- Expert-level hands-on experience with Java, Selenium, automated testing frameworks, and designing scalable, maintainable test automation solutions.
- Strong background leading performance, load, stress, regression, and smoke testing efforts for enterprise-level web and mobile applications.
- Deep understanding of system architectures, with experience participating in design reviews, walkthroughs, and providing input to improve testability and quality.
- Ability to evaluate, recommend, and implement testing tools, technologies, and automation strategies within CI/CD and DevOps environments.
- Experience working with non-technical end-users to develop, preview, and publish content on an external website supported by a CMS platform.
- Extensive experience writing and maintaining complex test strategies, plans, test cases, and validation documentation that follow Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards for Software and System Test validation.
- Experience coordinating testing across multiple teams, vendors, and environments, including development, testing, staging, and production support.
- Strong knowledge and hands-on experience testing for ADA / WCAG / Section 508 accessibility compliance and guiding teams on accessibility best practices.
- Experience providing technical leadership for complex testing projects, including mentoring team members and driving testing best practices.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues to developers, vendors, and business partners.
