Sydney | Hybrid | Permanent | ~$175k + Bonus + Super

One of Australia's most established data science and AI businesses is scaling its AI Security function as the organisation adopts AI at pace across every part of the business. This is a newly funded role, created as part of a deliberate expansion of the team, not a backfill. AI adoption here is not a side project: it is core to how the business builds and delivers, which means the security work is real, current, and visible across the whole organisation.

The role

You will be the hands-on specialist shaping how AI and machine learning solutions are developed, deployed and operated securely. The immediate focus is working through a backlog of security reviews, threat modelling engagements, and secure rollouts of enterprise AI tools. Over time the role expands into security automation, detection and response, and building security agents that automate manual security processes.

Day to day, that looks like

  • Security reviews and threat modelling for AI systems, foundation models, agentic frameworks and MCP integrations
  • Building and implementing security controls in AWS and Google Cloud environments
  • Supporting the secure rollout of enterprise AI tooling across the organisation
  • Defining guardrails, frameworks and standards that let teams adopt new AI technologies safely without slowing delivery
  • Coding and automation work, with a longer-term mandate to build security agents and self-service capabilities

You will sit within a small, senior AI Security team that includes principal-level specialists, with a genuine expectation that you learn from them and carry that capability forward.

What you'll bring

Must have:

  • Strong foundations in application security, DevSecOps, software engineering or cloud security. This is a security engineering role first, AI second
  • At least one practical, hands-on piece of AI security work: threat modelling an AI system, securing an LLM deployment, mitigating prompt injection or data leakage risks, or similar
  • Hands-on experience building security controls in AWS and/or GCP
  • Strong threat modelling capability, with a track record of turning complex risks into pragmatic technical controls
  • Coding ability sufficient to build solutions, not just advise on them
  • The ability to work directly with engineers, data scientists and architects and embed security without slowing delivery

Good to have:

  • A software engineering or developer background that transitioned into security
  • Familiarity with agentic architectures, MCP, RAG pipelines and the modern GenAI stack
  • Experience contributing to detection and response capabilities

Not suitable: pure AI engineers, or candidates whose AI security knowledge is entirely theoretical.

What's on offer

  • Sydney based with hybrid working (Tues-Thurs in office)
  • Competitive package matched to experience (~$175k + Bonus + Super)
  • Flexibility to work outside your home location for up to 30 days per year
  • A newly created role in a growing AI Security function, with genuine scope to shape how a large organisation secures its AI adoption
