Role Overview
You will play a key role in delivering secure and resilient capabilities across the UK Defence environment, supporting the development of systems that underpin critical UK Defence operations.
Working within a DevSecOps engineering team, you will contribute across the full lifecycle of secure system delivery — from early concept definition and requirements analysis through to design, development, validation, and deployment into operational defence platforms. The team operates using Agile methodologies, ensuring rapid and reliable delivery in highly secure environments.
This position is suited to an engineer with a strong emphasis on software development within secure, mission-critical DevSecOps programmes.
Responsibilities
- Operate as a multi-skilled engineer within an Agile DevSecOps team, with a focus on software delivery in defence environments
- Design, build, integrate, test, and deploy secure software solutions
- Collaborate with defence stakeholders and customer representatives to capture and refine technical requirements
- Present and demonstrate developed capabilities to customers within secure settings
- Develop and execute robust software and integration test strategies
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve defects across applications and deployment pipelines
- Produce clear and auditable technical documentation in line with defence standards
- Support and mentor junior engineers within the team
- Contribute to continuous improvement, including the identification of lessons learned and emerging best practice
- Evaluate and adopt new technologies to enhance secure DevSecOps capability within defence programmes
Skills & Experience
You will have a blend of technical expertise, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills, with experience ideally gained in secure or defence-related environments:
- Practical understanding of the Systems Engineering lifecycle, particularly within large-scale or secure systems
- Strong software development experience using Python, C#, Go, or similar languages
- Knowledge of API design and data architectures
- Solid grasp of networking principles and protocols
- Experience creating UI/UX concepts (e.g. using Balsamiq or similar tools)
- Exposure to software release governance, assurance, or audit processes
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, or VB
- Proven ability to analyse and resolve issues within high-security environments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, suitable for working with technical and non-technical defence stakeholders
- Flexible approach to working hours where operational requirements demand
Essential Requirements
- Active SC Clearance is required (or the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain higher UK security clearance)
- Good understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments
- Experience configuring COTS products or integrating open-source technologies to meet secure system requirements
Desirable
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline
- Experience designing and delivering solutions aligned to defence customer requirements
- Cloud certifications (e.g. Azure, AWS DevOps/Admin)
- Security-related certifications such as CREST or similar
- Professional accreditation (e.g. Chartered IT Professional – CITP) or equivalent
