Freelance Software Engineer

You will be part of a team working on high-impact platform services, focused on API evolution and system scalability. The team is currently improving service maturity, migrating legacy consumers to modern APIs, and ensuring seamless scaling without downtime.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain software applications using Java (17+) and modern frameworks (Spring / DropWizard)
• Design and develop RESTful and GraphQL APIs with strong lifecycle management (versioning, deprecation)
• Ensure high-quality code through unit and integration testing within CI/CD pipelines
• Own services end-to-end, including deployment, monitoring, and production operations
• Implement canary deployments and contribute to deployment orchestration
• Monitor services using observability tools (Grafana, Loki, OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing)
• Improve system performance, reliability, and scalability
• Participate in incident management and root cause analysis
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams on technical solutions and architecture decisions

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar
• Strong experience with Java (17+) and backend development
• Experience with API design and lifecycle management
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD, GitLab, and automated testing
• Experience with Kubernetes and cloud environments (AWS, EKS, S3)
• Knowledge of distributed systems and microservices architecture
• Experience working with OpenAPI specifications
• Understanding of canary deployment strategies
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills

Nice to Have

• Experience with GraphQL
• Knowledge of observability tools (Grafana, Loki, OpenTelemetry, Honeycomb)
• Experience improving developer experience (Swagger, SDKs, client libraries)
• Security awareness (e.g. phishing/spam prevention)
• Data modeling and system design experience
• Ability to read/understand Perl
