Application Support Engineer (software focus)

Location: Manchester (hybrid)

Salary: Up to £65,000 (depending on experience) + package

NOTE: Due to the nature of the client's work, you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance (DV).

Are you a Software Engineer looking for a role that combines development with operational problem-solving? Or perhaps you're currently working in 2nd/3rd Line Support and want to move into a more engineering-focused position?

We're working with a highly respected organisation delivering mission-critical technology solutions within a secure and complex environment. This is a unique opportunity to join a team where you'll split your time between software engineering and application support. Rather than sitting purely in an operations function, you'll actively contribute to software development while also ensuring the stability, performance and reliability of customer-facing applications.

Key Responsibilities:

• Supporting and maintaining business-critical applications and services
• Investigating, diagnosing and resolving application issues and customer-reported defects
• Developing fixes and enhancements for software applications
• Automating operational processes to improve reliability and efficiency
• Building and improving monitoring, alerting and observability capabilities
• Working closely with development teams to improve system resilience and performance
• Participating in an on-call rota
• Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across DevOps and SRE practices

What We're Looking For

We're particularly interested in candidates from one of the following backgrounds:

• Software Engineers looking for a more varied role that combines development with operational ownership
• 2nd or 3rd Line Support Engineers with hands-on coding experience who want to transition into a more engineering-focused position
• Application Support Engineers with strong troubleshooting and development skills

Experience in some of the following areas is required:

• Java development
• JavaScript, HTML and web technologies
• Linux and/or Windows environments
• Bash and PowerShell scripting
• AWS, Azure or other cloud platforms
• Elasticsearch, MongoDB or similar databases
• Docker and containerised environments
• Monitoring and logging platforms such as ELK
• Agile delivery environments and tools such as Jira
• Troubleshooting complex application and infrastructure issues
• DevOps, automation and deployment tooling
