OpenShift System Engineer (Linux / Virtualisation / Containers / OpenShift / GitOps / High Availability)

Location: Sydney/Brisbane

Role Overview

We’re seeking a hands-on System Engineer to design, build, and operate resilient platforms that power carrier-grade services. You will own Linux-based infrastructure and Red Hat OpenShift clusters, drive GitOps-first automation, and ensure high availability across virtualised and containerised workloads. Experience in the telecommunications industry—with its emphasis on reliability, performance, and security—is highly regarded.

What You’ll Do

  • Design & Operations
  • Engineer, harden, and operate Linux (RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu) systems in production.
  • Administer Red Hat OpenShift (clusters, nodes, networking, operators, upgrades, capacity planning).
  • Implement and maintain high availability and disaster recovery (clustering, load balancing, failover, multi-zone/region strategies).
  • Automation & Delivery
  • Build GitOps pipelines (Argo CD) and CI/CD workflows (GitLab CI) for platform and application delivery.
  • Script in Bash/Python to automate operations, health checks, and remediation.
  • Observability & Reliability

  • Implement end-to-end monitoring, logging, and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk).
  • Conduct performance tuning, capacity planning, and root-cause analysis; lead incident response and post-incident reviews.
  • Security & Compliance
  • Apply security baselines (CIS), vulnerability management, patching, and secrets management.
  • Enforce network segmentation, RBAC, and policy-as-code.
  • Collaboration
  • Partner with Network, Application, and Security teams to deliver reliable, scalable platforms.
  • Produce clear documentation, runbooks, and architecture diagrams; mentor peers on best practices.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Linux Engineering: Deep experience with RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu administration, systemd, SELinux, storage, networking, and performance tuning.
  • Virtualisation: Solid knowledge of VMware or KVM (OpenShift Virtualisation), VM lifecycle, templates.
  • Containers & OpenShift: Hands-on OpenShift administration (infrastructure & workload layers), Kubernetes fundamentals, operators, ingress/egress.
  • GitOps & Automation: Proven delivery using GitOps tools (Argo CD), CI/CD; strong Bash/Python.
  • High Availability: Designing and operating HA architectures (clustering, load balancers, quorum concepts).
  • Networking: Practical L2/L3, DNS/DHCP, routing, firewalls, TLS; container networking (CNI), OpenShift SDN/OVN-Kubernetes.
  • Observability: Prometheus/Grafana, Splunk, alerting best practices.
  • Security: RBAC, image signing/scanning, vulnerability management, patching, compliance frameworks; secrets management.
  • Operational Excellence: Incident management, on-call participation, runbook creation, change/release management, and stakeholder communication.

Highly Regarded (Telco Context)

  • Experience in telecommunications environments (carrier-grade operations, 24/7 uptime, NOC/SOC collaboration).
  • Familiarity with network functions virtualisation (NFV), cloud-native network functions (CNF), or service assurance tooling.
  • Understanding of OSS/BSS systems and integrations, and regulatory/compliance requirements common in telco.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant certifications (nice-to-have): RHCSA/RHCE, OpenShift Administration (EX280), Security-focused certs (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CISSP).

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated administration of OpenShift in production (upgrades, operators, networking, multi-tenancy).
  2. Proven GitOps implementation with Argo CD, including progressive delivery and policy enforcement.
  3. Track record designing/operating HA systems and performing DR exercises.
  4. Strong Linux and virtualisation expertise with automation-first mindset (Ansible, Bash/Python).
  5. Practical observability and performance tuning; ability to lead incident response.
  6. Experience in telco-grade environments or similarly high-availability, compliance-heavy sectors.
