Senior Automation Engineer - Ansible, vSphere/ Openshift

Contract Duration: 1 year
Typical Day in Role:
Platform Engineering & Operations
- Configure, manage, and support AAP components including Automation Controller, Private Automation Hub, and Event-Driven Ansible (EDA).
- Maintain inventories, credentials, RBAC, job templates, and workflows to support enterprise-scale automation.
- Support platform operations including troubleshooting, incident response, and lifecycle management.
Automation Development & Standards
- Design, develop, and maintain reusable Ansible roles, collections, and playbooks for infrastructure provisioning and lifecycle management across RHEL and Windows environments.
- Build and manage certified execution environments using ansible-builder, including dependency and image management.
- Apply enterprise automation standards, including idempotent design, testing, and code quality practices.
Enterprise Integration & Self-Service Enablement
- Integrate AAP with enterprise systems including ServiceNow (ITSM/CMDB), credential management platforms (CyberArk / HashiCorp Vault), and vulnerability tools (e.g., Tenable).
- Enable self-service automation capabilities by integrating AAP with provisioning and catalogue platforms (e.g., CloudBolt)
Transformation & Migration
- Support migration of legacy automation platforms (vRA, SaltStack, OneFuse) by translating existing provisioning logic into scalable Ansible playbooks, roles, and workflows.
- Ensure functional parity, documentation, and maintainability of migrated automation assets.
Security, Compliance & Governance
- Implement automation aligned to CIS benchmarks and internal security standards, including vulnerability remediation and continuous compliance.
- Ensure all solutions comply with Scotiabank IS&C security controls, including identity, access management, auditability, and data protection requirement.
- Produce audit-ready documentation, runbooks, and artefacts to support SOX and regulatory requirements.
Cloud & Virtualisation Automation
- Automate provisioning and lifecycle management of workloads on VMware vSphere and/or Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation (KubeVirt).
- Contribute to enterprise image lifecycle pipelines and ensure consistency across private cloud, Azure, and GCP environments.
Collaboration & CoE Model Enablement
- Work within a federated Automation CoE model, enforcing standards while enabling domain teams to develop automation aligned with enterprise guardrails.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, security, and application teams to scale automation adoption across the organization.
Contract Engagement Expectations
- Deliver production-grade, reusable automation aligned with enterprise standards and governance.
- Produce clear, maintainable documentation and knowledge transfer artefacts.
- Operate within Scotiabank’s security, audit, and compliance frameworks.
- Collaborate effectively across distributed teams within a federated delivery model.
Must Have Skills:
1. 10+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering or automation
2. 3+ years of hands-on experience with Ansible and Ansible Automation Platform (experience in developing Ansible roles, collections, playbooks, and Jinja2 templating)
3. 5+ years of experience with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines
4. 5+ years of experience automating Linux (RHEL) and Windows environments (Scripting experience in Python, Bash, and/or PowerShell/ WinRM)
5. Proven experience with VMware vSphere and/or OpenShift Virtualisation environments.
Nice-To-Have Skills:
- Experience in large-scale automation transformation programs (e.g., vRA/SaltStack migration).
- Familiarity with ServiceNow, CyberArk, HashiCorp Vault, and Tenable integrations.
- Strong understanding of CIS benchmarks and enterprise security hardening practices.
- Experience contributing to enterprise automation standards or working within an Automation CoE model.
- Red Hat certifications (e.g., RHCE, EX374 – AAP Development & Operations).
- Experience with image pipeline tooling (e.g., Packer, vSphere Content Library, cloud image galleries).
Soft Skills Required:
•Experience working within regulated enterprise environments with structured change management processes.
•Strong communication/negotiation skills – working with multiple stakeholders
