For our customer EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany, we are seeking for a Linux System Administrator with wide technical knowledge on design and operation of IT core services. The main activities involve virtualization and infrastructure technologies, VMware, GNU/Linux and IBM AIX.
The European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) is an intergovernmental organisation created through an international convention agreed by a current total of 30 European Member States.
EUMETSAT's primary objective is to establish, maintain and exploit European systems of operational meteorological satellites. EUMETSAT is responsible for the launch and operation of the satellites and for delivering satellite data to end-users as well as contributing to the operational monitoring of climate and the detection of global climate changes.
Responsibilities
Your tasks will typically include but are not limited to:
- Installation and configuration of operating systems and other software, including preventive administration: tuning of operating-system parameters to optimise performance, patching and security hardening.
- Monitoring of system performance and investigation of hardware/software and performance issues across compute, OS, middleware and platform services, performing root-cause analysis and the relevant corrective actions.
- Liaise with the external providers of HW and system SW maintenance for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions.
- Support to SW development and maintenance on system-related matters, including implementation and maintenance of scripts and/or procedures for the automated and/or controlled execution of activities.
- Generation and maintenance of technical documentation, configuration baselines, system inventories, as-built documentation and architecture diagrams.
- Design, maintain and improve infrastructure automation strategies (e.g. Terraform, Ansible) and configuration-management frameworks (Ansible, Chef, Puppet) to automate infrastructure provisioning, management and recurring administrative activities.
- Implement and maintain enterprise backup and disaster-recovery solutions.
- Participate in daily operations coordination meetings, anomaly review boards and the on-call rotation.
For day to day activities you shall apply the relevant change control and maintenance procedures. The complex environment requires a wide background of technical knowledge therefore your natural curiosity will help you to resolve complicated situations.
This is a full time position, located at our customer EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany, starting in December 2026 onwards. Standby / call-out support and provision of support to critical operations, may sometimes be required.
Your Profile:
The ideal candidates have an academic degree in IT, Computer Science or equivalent and possess the following skills:
- IBM AIX or GNU/Linux operating system(s);
- Virtualization technologies (VMware, NSX, PowerVC);
- Cloud infrastructure (OpenStack, Kubernetes);
- Automation (ansible) and monitoring (CheckMK, Nagios, ELK Stack, Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus);
- Experience with 24/7 large computing environments and operational best practices;
- Experience administering enterprise hardware platforms (Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, Cisco UCS, Lenovo ThinkSystem);
- Understanding of network and storage infrastructure;
- Proficiency in automation scripting (Bash, Python);
- Configuration management with Ansible, Chef and Puppet;
- Experience with enterprise backup and disaster-recovery solutions;
- Knowledge of ITIL service management processes (incident, change, problem management);
Proven knowledge and at least 5 years hands-on experience with at least 3 of the following is mandatory:
- GNU\Linux administration using different distributions (SLES, RHEL, Debian);
- IBM AIX administration and troubleshooting;
- Big scale VMware infrastructures;
- Core services management (DNS/LDAP/DHCP/infrastructure);
Proven knowledge and hands-on experience with the following is mandatory:
- Definition, implementation, testing and documentation of end-to-end system changes;
- Preparation of technical documentation in English in a complete and clear manner;
- Communication and interpersonal skills, being able to effectively communicate and coordinate activities within different teams;
- Ability to work autonomously and to perform regular (e.g. weekly) context switch.
Fluency in English (spoken and written) is mandatory, as English is the working language. This is a hybrid position where you will be working up to 3 days/week at home and the rest at EUMETSAT's location in Darmstadt (a city of 160K population, 30km south of Frankfurt am Main) Germany.
The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills together with the ability to effectively cooperate within the team.
