NOC Engineer
Indexed description
ABOUT THE ROLE
The NOC Engineer is the operational backbone of our Network Operations Center. This is an active, "on the tools" position where you will monitor eight production sites, triage alerts, and independently resolve P3/P4 infrastructure incidents. Working alongside the NOC Lead, you will gain deep exposure to a modern, GCP-hosted operational stack.
Team & Shift Structure
We use a sustainable, three-tier coverage model built to prevent burnout:
- Tier 1 (First Response): TechOps Engineers handle after-hours and weekend pages.
- Tier 2 (Escalation): You and the NOC Lead alternate weekly primary coverage, reporting to the Head of Infrastructure. You only receive escalations if an issue exceeds Tier 1 scope.
- Hours: Mon–Fri daytime (~08:00–18:00 MT). Shift handovers are efficiently tracked via Jira and a quick daily sync.
- On-call participation is compensated separately from base salary.
- Incident Response & Triage: Own the watch. Monitor stacks (Zabbix, LibreNMS, Grafana, Graylog), resolve P3/P4 issues using defined runbooks, and accurately escalate P1/P2 events to the NOC Lead within 15–30 minutes.
- Infrastructure Monitoring: Watch over network health across 8 sites (WAN, FortiGate firewalls, Cisco switching, Proxmox edge, and Starlink backup readiness). Monitor DHCP scopes and flag ISP circuit degradation.
- Asset & Access Tracking: Maintain NetBox IPAM accuracy and the ISP account register. Execute Starlink account operations, track device license calendars, and assist with monthly site inventory audits.
- Change & Access Execution: Handle approved maintenance window changes, process VPN user provisioning/revocations, and retrospectives for emergency changes.
- Documentation: Deliver mandatory, crisp shift handover reports in Jira and draft knowledge-base articles for new technical fixes.
- 3+ years in a NOC or infrastructure support role (or 2+ years with proven on-call incident ownership).
- Networking Fundamentals: Solid grasp of VLANs, DHCP, DNS, HSRP, routing, switching, and firewalls.
- Technical Stack: Familiarity with mainstream monitoring platforms (Zabbix, LibreNMS, PRTG) and ticketing systems (Jira).
- On-Call Ready: Comfortable taking Tier 2 overnight/weekend escalation calls from TechOps, ownership-driven, and prompt to respond.
- Highly Desirable: Experience with FortiGate firewalls, OpenVPN, GCP/Cloud networking, NetBox IPAM, Proxmox virtualization, or high-density compute environments.
- Attributes: Alert, methodical, eager to learn, and fiercely reliable when on watch.
