Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain IaC for server provisioning, configuration, lifecycle management, and operational automation.
- Build and maintain reusable Ansible roles/playbooks, modules, inventories, templates, and supporting scripts.
- Develop GitOps-oriented workflows using pull requests, code review, automated validation, CI/CD pipelines, approval gates, and controlled deployment practices.
- Translate infrastructure requirements into maintainable code, documentation, runbooks, and repeatable operational procedures.
- Improve infrastructure reliability, consistency, and auditability by reducing manual configuration and eliminating configuration drift.
- Support production Linux server operations, including troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, incident response, patching, and change management.
- Partner with networking, storage, identity, security, application, HPC, and research computing stakeholders.
- Mentor team members on Git workflows, infrastructure automation standards, code review practices, and safe use of IaC tooling.
- Support secure automation practices, including secrets handling, least privilege access, auditability, and compliance-driven configuration management.
- Provide engineering support and input into architecture team efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Configuration management at depth using Ansible and/or Puppet, with Git as the authoritative source of truth (PR-based change control, CI/CD pipelines).
- Automated provisioning of virtual, cloud, and bare-metal infrastructure using tools such as Ansible or Terraform.
- Strong Linux server administration experience.
- Excellent scripting skills using Python, Bash, or similar to build and maintain automation.
- Experience building CI/CD validation for IaC repositories, including linting, syntax validation, test execution, and controlled deployments.
- Proficiency with Git-based engineering workflows, including branching strategies, pull requests, code review, merge conflict resolution, release tagging, repository standards, and mentoring teammates in effective Git usage.
- Working knowledge of supporting infrastructure such as networking, DNS, shared storage, and identity management.
- Effective collaboration with engineers across disciplines and directly with customers, including researchers and other technical subject matter experts.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.
- 5+ years of relevant infrastructure engineering experience, including at least 2 years building production Infrastructure as Code or configuration management automation.
- Windows server administration experience.
- HPC and research computing experience.
- Familiarity with secrets management and identity integration.
- Experience in a regulated or compliance-driven environment (FISMA, NIST 800-53).
- Experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware.
- Exposure to monitoring, backup, and data center operations.
