About the Role

We’re seeking a Full-stack Developer Java / Angular (Freelance) to join our client’s mission-critical Defence program in Brussels. This is a unique opportunity to take ownership of a diverse application landscape, driving the re-engineering and modernization of essential business systems. You’ll be at the heart of a long-term transformation, ensuring operational excellence and future-proofing technology for a vital sector.

Our client is embarking on a complete takeover and modernization of approximately thirty business applications for a major Defence program. Your expertise will directly impact the reliability, security, and evolution of these systems, supporting national infrastructure and enabling innovation. This is a high-stakes environment where your contributions will shape the digital backbone of a critical organization.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead the development and maintenance of business applications, ensuring seamless handover and operational continuity.
• Design and implement application components and RESTful web services using Java 17+, Spring Boot 3+, and Angular 19+.
• Collaborate closely with technical leads and senior architects to re-engineer or rewrite applications, aligning with modern development standards.
• Participate in technical working groups, Scrum ceremonies, and user meetings to drive project outcomes.
• Contribute to testing, technical documentation, deployment, evaluation, and reporting (including Unit testing and JIRA tracking).
• Integrate into existing teams, quickly understanding and improving complex, multi-system environments.

Technical Skills

• Java 17+ (Confirmed)
• Spring 4+, Spring Boot 3+ (Confirmed)
• Angular 19+ (Confirmed)
• RESTful Web Services, OpenAPI (Confirmed/Junior)
• Test-driven development: JUnit, Mockito, Cypress
• Maven (Confirmed)
• Docker (Junior)
• GIT (Confirmed)
• NPM (Junior)
• Relational databases & O/R mapping: PostgreSQL, SQL Server
• Ability to read and understand BPMN, UML, and documentation practices
• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies, continuous integration

Nice to Have

• Keycloak, Hibernate, Lombok, Mapstruct
• Openshift/Kubernetes, GitLab CI, Sonar
• OAuth 2.0, Flyway or Liquibase
• Jira/Confluence

Language Proficiency

• French or Dutch: Expert level (spoken and written)
• English: Advanced level (written)

Other Requirements

• Minimum 7 years of full-time professional Java development experience (full-stack preferred, with a passion for frontend)
• Experience in multi-system integration and complex environments
• Solution and customer-oriented mindset
• Problem solver, able to quickly understand and improve existing code
• Ability to integrate easily into established teams
• EU nationals only
• Partial remote work: On-site presence required at least 2 days per week in Brussels
• Freelance contract until 30/09/2026, with potential for extension
• Standard working hours: 7h48 per day
