Java Spring Boot Engineer

Back-end Engineer - Path to Plus Team
Tech-first. Ego-free. User-obsessed. Over one million Danes use Skatteguiden to understand and optimise their taxes. We automate tax tracking, surface deductions people didn't know they had, and give users the insights they need to make better financial decisions — all directly connected to the Danish tax authority. We're an independent company of around 50 people based in Copenhagen, with a 4.7-star rating and a simple mission: make financial insight accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford an accountant.
About the Role
Path to Plus is the engine that converts users into paying members and keeps them there. As a Backend Engineer on this team, you'll be primarily building and shipping features as part of a cross-functional product team, with an active pipeline and direct commercial impact. Alongside that, there's real work to be done in truly owning the services we're responsible for. Improving the codebase is part of the job, and engineers here have a genuine say in how that gets prioritised. You'll be joining a cross-functional team of software engineers, a product manager, a designer, and a data engineer.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with product, design, data, and frontend to ship features end-to-end.
- Share ownership of backend services that power the membership and conversion funnel, as part of a team that takes build it, own it, operate it seriously. These are production systems with real users and real revenue attached.
- Build and maintain integrations with external services — think government data sources, mapping services, and user communication tools.
- Ship stock trading tax support — one of our most concrete upcoming projects, adding tax calculation support for stocks with multi-broker architecture on the horizon. You'll be part of designing and building that.
- Contribute to our move to Azure. We're migrating our systems and applications in the coming months, and cloud architecture thinking will be an active part of the role.
- Ensure observability of critical business flows. You'll help us catch issues before users do. You work with tech debt deliberately. We believe tech debt belongs on the roadmap, not hidden under it. You'll help identify, prioritise, and plan for it alongside the team.
Required Skills
- Solid experience with Java, JUnit, and Spring Boot. This is your expertise.
- Working knowledge of RabbitMQ or a comparable message broker.
- Familiarity with MySQL and relational data modelling.
- Comfortable working in established codebases with real production traffic. You know how to move carefully when it matters.
- Genuine enthusiasm for AI. You use AI tools daily in your own work and are always looking for new ways to apply them. This is an engineering-wide expectation at Skatteguiden, not a nice-to-have.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Kubernetes, Argo, GitHub Actions, and Grafana.
- Experience operating services in Azure (or another cloud environment) — understanding how your code runs in production, optimising resources, and thinking about cost without needing to own the infrastructure.
- Prior work in a product-led engineering organisation.
