Staff Backend Engineer

The role
SafetyCulture's platform is used by frontline teams across some of the world's most complex organisations. The way we model permissions, manage access, and enforce security boundaries directly determines whether those organisations trust us with their most sensitive operations.
This role exists to own the technical direction of how SafetyCulture handles identity, access control, and permissions at scale — and to make that capability genuinely best-in-class. You'll drive architecture decisions that affect every team building on top of our platform, and set the bar for how we design and deliver security-critical systems.
The tech stack
We use a modern technology stack including Swift/Kotlin/C++ (mobile); React.js (front end); Golang/node.js (back end); AWS/Kafka/Kubernetes (infrastructure).
What You'll Be Doing
- Own architecture and technical direction for role-based access control (RBAC), identity management, and permissions across the platform
- Lead delivery of complex, cross-cutting features — scoping, estimating, and shipping end-to-end
- Raise the technical bar through code review, design critique, and deliberately building the people around you
- Translate complex security trade-offs for product partners and leadership
- Surface problems others haven't noticed yet and drive them to resolution without waiting to be directed
- Use AI-assisted development tools fluently (Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) and help the team establish good practice around them
- Deep backend expertise with production experience designing access control systems (RBAC, OAuth 2.0, OIDC, or similar)
- Comfort operating across service-oriented architectures and at SaaS scale
- A track record of owning delivery — not just contributing — and making smart effort vs impact calls
- You give honest feedback, receive it well, and invest in the people around you as much as your own output
- You move without waiting for a perfect brief, and you think about the customer behind every technical decision Clear ability and desire to demonstrate SafetyCulture values (Think Customer, Open Honest Always, Better as a Team, Be Bold Bring Action)
- Flexible working arrangements. We encourage you to create the best work blend while working from your home and the local SafetyCulture office
- You’ll have access to professional and personal training and development opportunities
- We’re a pet friendly workplace
- Hackathons - if you’re into them :)
- Workshops and Lunch & Learns from our leadership and industry experts
- We also encourage you to get involved in the community, open source work, attending talks and events, and experimenting with new technologies; whatever floats your boat!
- Equity with high growth potential, and a competitive salary
- Great food! Our In-house chefs will serve up fresh and healthful breakfast, lunch and unlimited snacks catering to all dietary requirements
- Love coffee or tea? Our commercial espresso machine has you covered. We also have beer and wine on tap, a pool table, board games, and books library
- Wellbeing is key! In addition to our onsite gym, we provide EAP services and generous parental leave policy
- Last but not least, we celebrate quarterly and our teams love the annual ShipIt global offsite
