About EYOX

EYOX is a Dutch medtech startup making eye care simpler and more accessible. We build smartphone-based tools that bring professional eye health assessments to places they could not reach before. We are building a platform for smartphone-based eye care. On it sit an app that turns phone imaging into clinical-grade eye health assessments, and a smartphone-connected optical measurement device we are building with a hardware partner, with more to come. Our team is small (around 8 people), our ambitions are not. We are working toward MDR certification and clinical validation.

The role

We are looking for a software engineer to be the first dedicated software hire and own the software and the architecture across our platform. Your first major build is the smartphone app for a handheld optical measurement device we are building with a hardware partner, from the native mobile app through to the integration with the device. Alongside it you help drive our imaging-based assessment app, which is in pilot with opticians now. This is a hands-on role. You write code every day, and you own the architecture and engineering execution. You work closely with our offshore development partner, define the interfaces, and set the technical bar for the work in your area.

What you will do

You are handed problems, a product, and the trust to own them end to end.

  • Ship. Get working software in front of users quickly, then iterate
  • Own the smartphone app that drives a handheld optical measurement device: powering and controlling it over USB-C, running the real-time capture and autofocus loop, and processing the images on the phone
  • Work directly with our hardware partner on the device interface, the communication protocol, and the technical requirements. We are in those discussions now, so you help shape them
  • Make the architecture and build calls across the platform, including our assessment app that is in pilot now, where the right call is often not yet written down
  • Work within our regulated software lifecycle (tests, CI, code review, IEC 62304), and help improve it where you see better
  • Ground your work in how opticians and specialists actually use the product, and join user and pilot conversations

What we are looking for

  • 5+ years as a software engineer, with real ownership of shipped products
  • Broad engineering strength: you know architecture, make the technical decisions that shape a product, and ship across multiple products
  • Native mobile development experience (iOS or Android)
  • A strong plus: experience building mobile apps that talk to and control external hardware over USB-C or BLE (device control, real-time capture)
  • Fluent with AI tooling. You use it daily and get genuine leverage from it
  • Pragmatic: you ship the essential 80% and iterate, and you use technical debt deliberately
  • Senior enough to hold technical discussions directly with a hardware partner and to set the bar for an offshore software team
  • Comfortable owning a surface end to end in a regulated context (traceable changes, documented decisions)
  • Based in the Netherlands. This is a hard requirement, and we cannot sponsor visas

Nice to have

  • Experience in regulated software (medtech, automotive, avionics)
  • Computer vision or image-processing knowledge
  • Interest in ophthalmology, medical devices, or healthtech
  • Dutch-speaking

What we offer

  • A genuine first-engineer role: you own products and architecture, not a backlog of tickets
  • Fully remote, 32 to 40 hours a week with flexible hours. Expected to meet in person around once per month.
  • Autonomy to drive and own the engineering of your area
  • Impact: your code goes into medical devices that make eye care accessible to many
  • A small, senior team where your decisions matter from day one

How to apply

Email your CV and motivation letter to [email protected]. In your motivation letter, tell us about one product you shipped end to end: what went wrong, and what you personally did to fix it. If you have shipped something hardware-connected (for example a phone app driving a device over USB-C or BLE), make it that one.
