CONTEXT

In the framework of the study RadTrainER, we are looking for a full-time researcher in Computer Science with a master’s degree in computer science.

The Royal Military Academy is fully recognized as a university, fulfilling the same criteria as civilian universities. The RMA is also conducting scientific research at university level for projects funded by the Belgian Defense department or external sources.

PROJECT

You work within the DLD-NUC department of the Defence Laboratories (DLD) in the Major Housiau Quartier in Peutie and in close collaboration with other DLD’s departments. You conduct scientific research at university level on a project entitled ‘RadTrainER’.

The aim of the project is to develop a virtual reality environment to train military operators in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) situations. Final product must be stand-alone and (friendly) usable for uninitiated person. It means that few tools and features must be developed and integrated to suit to end-users needs.


MAIN TASKS

Your main tasks will be:

  • The development of virtual reality environment
  • The integration of virtual reality material/accessories for multiple users
  • The development of features specific to CBRN and military fields


SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Degree(s) required: Master’s degree in computer science, master’s degree in computer engineering, master’s degree in computer industrial engineering

This position is open for junior profiles (ideally 0-3 years of experience) or experienced profiles (ideally 3 years of experience minimum).


“MUST HAVE” skills:

  • Experience in C++
  • Experience in Virtual Reality development
  • Experience in Game development
  • Training or experience in Unreal Engine
  • Training or experience in Open XR


“NICE TO HAVE” skills:

  • Training or experience in Blender
  • Training or experience in Git
  • Acknowledge in Physics


Personal skills:

  • You communicate your results in a clear, concise and precise manner.
  • You are involved and result oriented.
  • You are honest, loyal toward the institution and respect confidentiality.
  • You solve problems autonomously and find alternatives or solutions.

Other skills:

  • The applicant shall have good knowledge of English (oral / written).
  • Minimum knowledge of French or Dutch is an added value for collaboration with peers.


SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • The researcher may be exposed to classified information and will therefore have to obtain the required security clearance. The candidate must consent with the background check required to obtain this clearance, which will be executed by Belgian Defense.
  • Only applicants with a nationality of a country that is both part of NATO and the EU will be eligible.
  • Working for the Patrimony requires living in Belgium for the duration of the study.

CONTRACT

  • Probable date of recruitment: From November 1st of 2026, in consultation with the applicant.
  • Status: Full-time employment based on an open-ended contract with the Patrimony of the Royal Military Academy (you will not be a civil servant).
  • Please note that your contract will be open-ended, but the financing of the contract will be tied to the funding project, which is guaranteed for 5 years (until 30th of October 2031). The financing of your contract beyond that period is therefore not 100% guaranteed. However, the Patrimony has a policy to keep the good elements on board and the research focus of this job offer fits within our core research activities, so there is a high chance that we will be able to offer you follow-up projects beyond that date if a new funding is available and if you decide to stay.
  • Wage scale: wage scale NA11 (holder of a Master's degree in Science or equivalent or holder of an industrial Ir degree or equivalent Master's in Engineering Sciences in the same area of expertise), with valuable / relevant seniority. A salary simulation can be done here: Simulateur de salaire. RMA applies a merit-based research career track, allowing researchers to advance in wage scale based upon annual evaluations
  • Holiday pay.
