Akeneo is the leading AI-powered Product Data Platform that helps brands, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers unify product data and pricing to power better product experiences, smarter decisions, and business growth in an AI-driven commerce world.

We’re all about experience - from the best-in-class product we build to the inspiring environment we create for our employees. You’ll grow in a dynamic environment where your ideas and expertise will make an impact from day one. Our flexible work model empowers you to thrive, balancing professional success with personal fulfilment. At Akeneo, you’ll be part of a supportive and collaborative team that values open communication, shared successes, and meaningful relationships.

The Team and Areas of Ownership

The SDM team owns the Akeneo Supplier Data Manager, the front door to the Akeneo Product Cloud for data.

SDM is a painkiller, not a vitamin. Retailers and distributors don't adopt it because it's nice to have; they adopt it because, without it, onboarding supplier data is a manual, error-prone job that keeps products off the shelf. Hundreds of suppliers send product data in various formats (spreadsheets, PDFs, images), and that data must be cleaned, classified, enriched, and verified before it reaches the catalogue. SDM does this through a pipeline of connected modules: mapping, validation, classification, extraction, multi-destination distribution, and more.

The scale is what makes this hard. These are not small files you can hand to an LLM and get a clean answer back. Supplier catalogues are large, constantly changing, and full of industry-specific terms, formatting quirks, and domain knowledge that trip up general-purpose tools. Some of the processing is deterministic; some of it isn't. Building systems that handle all of it reliably, at volume, across hundreds of supplier configurations, is the engineering problem you'd be here to help solve.

SDM is a cross-functional team that owns its work end-to-end and prides itself on solving the right problems, not just shipping code. Leadership sets direction and decides how much to invest in each problem; we own how to get there. When priorities compete, we make the trade-off together, grounded in customer data rather than opinion, and we're comfortable saying no to work that doesn't move the needle. The team is in a period of real investment and acceleration, and we're hiring engineers to help own SDM's future.

We're hiring at multiple levels on this team. This is a Senior Software Engineer role. If it feels like too much, our Software Engineer opening may be a better fit; you can always change once you speak with us.

What You Will Deliver In The Role…

  • Scale SDM for enterprise customers: the architecture, infrastructure, and service design that keep SDM fast and correct as data volumes and customer complexity grow.
  • Build the data-processing pipelines: the core of SDM is turning messy supplier data into trusted, high-volume catalogue data. Some steps are deterministic; some use LLMs to extract attributes and classify products. You'd be making the whole pipeline reliable and cost-effective in production, which is real work on architecture, algorithms, and handling failure at scale, not just calling a model and hoping.
  • Build collaboration and governance features: help retailers and their suppliers work together safely, with contribution experiences that include guardrails, delegation, and approval workflows.
  • Ship and own what you build: monitor it in production, close the loop with support, and drive operational excellence. A weekly support rotation is shared across the team, ensuring ownership over time; most of your time is spent building rather than reacting.
  • Actively take part in structured customer discovery: validate hypotheses, understand real ways of working, and gather feedback that directly shapes what gets built.
  • Work across the company: collaborate with adjacent teams so that what SDM builds helps the wider platform, and vice versa.

What Will Set You Up For Success At Akeneo…

You're a strong software engineer first. That matters more here than any specific tool, domain, or the size of the company you came from. You don't need to be a specialist or to have a big-scale pedigree; you need to be someone who takes on genuinely hard problems and works out how to solve them. You won't be doing that alone; you'll have the team and a wider Staff Engineering group to think with. You don't have to know everything in this job description before you start; the domain is learnable if the fundamentals and drive are there.

  • You build systems, not just features. You reason about design and architecture, and you know enough about data structures and algorithms to make smart decisions. You can work out what happens when scale is an issue (throughput, latency, correctness under load) and design pragmatic solutions, whether or not you've faced our exact volumes before. You know the difference between something that looks like it works and something that actually does.
  • You go deep when things break. When a system fails at scale (or shows early signals), you can find the real cause, reason about it, and fix it. You're comfortable in the hard, unglamorous work: debugging, experimenting, and getting to the bottom of things.
  • You own what you build, end to end, from talking with customers to designing the solution, through shipping, diagnosis, metrics reporting, and observability.
  • Strong Python or PHP. You need to be strong in at least one: Python powers SDM's data-processing pipelines; PHP underpins the wider Akeneo Product Cloud. Both are ideal, but a strong grasp of one, with a willingness to learn the other, is what matters. TypeScript and React cover frontend work and new services; experience there is a plus, not a day-one requirement. GCP and infrastructure-as-code are useful, but we're hiring strong fundamentals, not someone who ticks every box on paper.
  • You care why, not just how. You think about the customer's workflows throughout the day, the adoption path, and potential failure modes. You're the kind of engineer who skims support tickets even when not on support because you care about customers' overall experience.
  • You're comfortable with ambiguity. You are at your best when you help shape what gets built, run experiments, and make trade-offs. If you do your best work given a clear problem and the room to solve it, this is the place.
  • You communicate clearly and collaborate on purpose. Clear, concise communication and active collaboration are critical for this distributed team. You need to be able to talk to anyone about the topic you are working on and bring others along for the journey.
  • You lift the people around you. You care about helping people grow and succeed, including those outside your immediate team, and you lead by example rather than by title.
  • You use AI to think, not just to type. We build with tools like Claude Code, and the engineers who get the most from them use them to explore, experiment, and reason through hard problems, not just to produce code faster. When anyone can generate code, the value is in knowing what to build and why. (This is about how we build, not what we build.)

You don't need to tick every box. We strongly encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply. If you are excited about this opportunity but your experience differs slightly, we still want to hear from you!
