Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are looking for Software Engineers to join their friendly and supportive engineering community. You will work with the latest cloud technologies and in agile delivery teams building clean, secure and accessible services that make a real difference to the UK public. About Role

DVLA delivers some of the UK's most widely used digital services, supporting millions of people who apply for driving licences, tax vehicles or make vehicle enquiries each year. As a Software Engineer, you will join an agile delivery team working alongside senior and lead engineers to build, improve and operate secure, accessible and reliable services at national scale.

Current deliveries include:

  • Two major programmes of work, modernising our drivers and vehicles services and systems.
  • Entirely new services including a new customer portal, mobile digital driving licence and identity platform.
  • The DVLA digital payment service that helps us collect around 6 billion pounds a year.
  • New versions of key driving licence services that will help us to reduce paper forms, reduce waiting times and to enable all of our customers to transact digitally.

You will also be a part of the new electronic Vehicle Excise Duty programme, a legislative digital service being delivered by DVLA to modernise how Vehicle Excise Duty is administered and delivered digitally. It's an exciting time to join and contribute to a high-impact digital programme.

Technology stack

No specific technology experience is essential, DVLA are open to transferable skills and a willingness to learn:

  • Core services: Java, Spring Boot and OpenAPI
  • Front-end: Ruby on Rails, React and reusable UI components
  • Serverless: Node.js, TypeScript, AWS Lambda, Step Functions and DynamoDB
  • Architecture: Event-driven architecture patterns
  • AI tooling: AI coding assistants used responsibly to support software delivery

Responsibilities

  • Developing Software to meet user needs.
  • Following Best Practice Guidelines and help to improve those Guidelines.
  • Writing clean, secure and well-tested code.
  • Coaching and mentoring more junior colleagues.
  • Operating the services they build and identify issues in production.

Essential skills

  • Experience working as a software engineer across multiple projects, developing software using a variety of technologies and tools.
  • Experience coding in one or more languages (i.e Java, Ruby, C#, Python, TypeScript or similar)
  • Ability to work in a team to build, test and deliver features or services.
  • Awareness of CI/CD and good software delivery practices.
  • Passion for clean, secure, well-tested code and continuous learning.
  • Experience delivering services using a public cloud provider such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud or a motivation to develop these skills.

Alongside your salary of £39,163 (£35,663 plus a Recruitment Retention Allowance of £3,500) Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency contributes 28.9% of the base salary towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

Further Information:

  • This role requires SC clearance, a condition of which is to have been present in the UK for 5 out of the past 5 years.
  • DVLA does not hold a UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker License sponsor and are unable to sponsor any individuals for Skilled Worker Sponsorship.
  • 60% Swansea office attendance (typically 3 days / week)
