A leading insurance organisation is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join its growing data team. This role will focus on building and optimising a scalable, cloud-based data platform that supports underwriting, claims, risk, and broader business operations.
You will play a key role in designing high-performance data solutions, with a strong emphasis on PostgreSQL, Amazon Redshift, and AWS-based infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using Airflow and related orchestration tools
- Architect and optimise data warehouse solutions in Amazon Redshift, focusing on performance, scalability, and efficient data modelling
- Work extensively with PostgreSQL, including performance tuning, indexing strategies, partitioning, and database optimisation
- Develop and maintain transformation layers using DBT to support reporting and analytics
- Support batch and near real-time data processing across core insurance data sets (e.g. claims, policies, risk data)
- Manage and enhance AWS-based infrastructure (Redshift, RDS PostgreSQL, S3, MWAA, DMS)
- Ensure high standards of data quality, governance, and lineage across critical datasets
- Collaborate with stakeholders across underwriting, finance, and risk teams to deliver reliable data solutions
- Continuously evaluate and improve tooling, performance, and scalability of the data platform
Requirements
- Expert-level SQL skills with strong experience optimising queries across large datasets
- Advanced Python experience for data engineering and pipeline development
- Deep hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including performance tuning and database internals
- Proven experience working with Amazon Redshift, including warehouse design and optimisation
- Strong experience within AWS data environments (S3, RDS, Redshift, etc.)
- Solid experience with Apache Airflow in production environments
- Strong understanding of modern data architecture and best practices
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools (e.g. Datadog, CloudWatch)
Nice to Have
- Experience with DBT
- Exposure to real-time or event-driven data processing
- Experience working with insurance or financial services data
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code or containerisation (Terraform, Docker)
