About The Role

We're looking for a talented Data Engineer (12-month MTC) to join our Data & Analytics Team. You will contribute to the design, development and maintenance of our new cloud Enterprise Data Warehouse. You will help drive the vision, evolution, and innovation of the data warehouse and data governance initiatives. The end goal is to deliver accurate, consistent, reliable data to support business intelligence, data insights, machine learning solutions and business-wide data-led decision-making that will help revolutionise our business.

What You'll Do

• Build the data foundations at Gumtree Group that facilitate analytics, reporting and AI rollout at scale
• Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of scalable data pipelines for ingesting, transforming and storing data using dbt and BigQuery, applying data modelling best practices and query optimisation for large-scale analytical workloads
• Conduct SQL data investigations and optimisations across pipelines and data models
• Conduct peer and AI-output code reviews across dbt models, pipelines, and Python — with a focus on failure modes common in agent-generated code
• Implement data quality testing, monitoring, alerting, and pipeline orchestration — troubleshooting and resolving production defects and ETL issues as they arise
• Design and maintain governed semantic and metric layers that power Claude-enabled self-serve analytics, allowing business users to query data in natural language without writing SQL
• Design and govern MCP server integrations connecting Claude and AI agents to BigQuery and internal data tools, enabling secure agentic workflows across the business
• Implement BigQuery security controls — including IAM, column and row-level access, and audit logging — to support AI governance and data privacy

What You'll Bring

• 5+ years of experience in data engineering, including ETL processes and data warehouse development in cloud environments
• Advanced SQL experience for data transformation and querying
• Hands-on experience with dbt and BigQuery for data transformation, pipeline development, and data modelling, with strong Python proficiency and familiarity with CI/CD practices
• Experience working with large volumes of data, optimising for ETL performance and cost
• Experience designing secure, least-privilege data access patterns in GCP, including IAM and DLP
• Proficiency with Claude as both an agentic coding tool and a self-serve analytics interface, enabling business users to query data through natural language
