This role is based at our Milton, Brisbane corporate office on a Monday to Friday roster (5/2), with the option to WFH two days per week.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of this role include:
Semantic Layer Implementation
- Develop and maintain dimensional models (dimensions, fact tables, DACT structures) in accordance with defined modelling standards.
- Implement transformation logic from ingestion (Bronze/Silver) into curated Gold-layer semantic structures.
- Ensure correct grain, referential integrity, and conformance across shared dimensions.
- Support integration of new data domains into the existing semantic framework.
- Develop and maintain Azure Data Factory (ADF) pipelines in line with established ingestion and transformation patterns.
- Work within the existing Azure Data Lake structure, including partitioning and incremental load strategies.
- Support performance optimisation, data quality validation, and operational stability of pipelines.
- Assist in managing ingestion from structured databases and enterprise applications via APIs.
- Implement ingestion logic for REST/JSON-based APIs, including authentication, pagination, incremental extraction, and error handling.
- Transform structured and semi-structured data into dimensional models aligned to agreed standards.
- Conduct impact analysis when upstream systems change.
- Develop DAX measures and calculation logic aligned with defined business definitions.
- Optimise semantic models for performance and scalability in Power BI.
- Support report developers by providing well-structured and documented semantic artefacts.
- Maintain technical documentation of data flows, model structures, and transformation logic.
- Adhere to naming conventions, modelling standards, and governance frameworks.
- Support continuous improvement of modelling patterns and delivery practices.
- Work closely with the BI & Data team to clarify requirements and confirm design direction.
- Engage with business stakeholders to understand reporting needs and translate them into robust technical implementation.
- Provide technical input into design discussions where appropriate
- (Desirable) Degree level in IT / Computer Science related (Data Engineer)
- (Essential) 4–8+ years’ experience in BI development, data modelling, or analytics engineering.
- (Essential) Strong SQL skills.
- (Essential) Proven experience building dimensional models (star schema, conformed dimensions, fact tables).
- (Essential) Solid experience with Power BI, including DAX and model optimisation.
- (Essential) Experience working across ingestion → transformation → presentation layers.
- (Essential) Experience developing and maintaining Azure Data Factory pipelines.
- (Essential) Familiarity with Azure Data Lake storage structures and partitioning strategies.
- (Essential) Experience integrating data from enterprise applications via REST APIs.
- (Desirable) Exposure to CI/CD and version-controlled BI development.
- (Desirable) Understanding of incremental load patterns and watermarking.
- (Desirable) Familiarity with data governance practices in an enterprise environment.
- (Desirable) Strong execution focus with high attention to detail and data accuracy.
- (Desirable) Comfortable working within established architectural standards and agreed modelling patterns.
- (Desirable) Structured and methodical approach to problem solving.
- (Desirable) Collaborative and respectful in technical discussions.
- (Desirable) Proactive in identifying improvements while aligning to defined design direction.
- (Desirable) Able to operate independently while maintaining clear communication and alignment with leadership.
