About SMPnet: SMPnet is at the forefront of developing innovative solutions for power grid management. Our team is looking for a Senior Forecasting & Data Engineer to develop and maintain the data infrastructure and forecasting capabilities that power next-generation smart grid applications.

Role Overview: We are looking for a Forecasting & Data Engineer who can own the journey from raw operational data through to production forecasting services and actionable insights. You will work on forecasting energy demand, renewable generation, and grid behaviour using real-world utility datasets. This is a hands-on role that combines data engineering, analytics, and forecasting.

What will you be doing?

Forecasting & Analytics

  • Develop, maintain, and improve forecasting models for:

o Electricity demand

o Renewable generation

o Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)

o Grid operational metrics

  • Evaluate forecast performance and continuously improve model accuracy through feature engineering and model tuning.
  • Analyse forecasting errors and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support operational decision-making through predictive analytics and reporting.
  • Contribute to the development of forecasting methodologies used within the existing grid management software stack.

Data Engineering & Platform Development

  • Own data pipelines supporting forecasting and analytics workloads.
  • Design and maintain ETL/ELT processes that transform raw telemetry into analysis-ready datasets.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality datasets for model training, validation, and reporting.
  • Write performant Flux and SQL queries against InfluxDB and PostgreSQL.
  • Collaborate with cloud and edge engineers to optimise data architecture, storage strategies, and query performance.
  • Implement data quality monitoring, validation checks, and automated alerting.

Time-Series Data Management

  • Work with large-scale operational time-series datasets from power systems and distributed energy resources.
  • Develop feature extraction and aggregation pipelines for forecasting applications.
  • Manage historical data retention and data lifecycle processes.
  • Ensure data consistency, integrity, and availability across forecasting workflows.

Collaboration & Standards

  • Work closely with software engineers and power systems engineers to integrate forecasting capabilities into products.
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level data engineers, fostering technical growth and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Contribute to data governance, documentation, and engineering best practices.
  • Participate in technical reviews and sprint planning.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging forecasting techniques, time-series analytics, and utility industry trends.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • 4+ years of professional experience on production-grade systems in forecasting and data engineering
  • Experience developing and evaluating advanced time-series forecasting models, including probabilistic forecasting, hierarchical forecasting, and multi-horizon forecasting approaches.
  • Experience developing and evaluating forecasting models using real-world datasets.
  • Hands-on experience with Python, InfluxDB, SQL, PostgreSQL Flux query language (or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with cloud-native environments and containerised applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Bonus Skills & Experience

  • Experience in energy, utilities, smart grid, or industrial IoT domains.
  • Knowledge of power systems fundamentals (load profiles, renewables, etc.).
  • Experience deploying models to edge or resource-constrained environments.
  • Familiarity with physics-informed or hybrid ML/simulation models.
  • Exposure to graph-based modelling (graph neural networks, network topology).

What We Offer:

  • A full-time position with a competitive salary.
  • Benefits, including stock options, 28 days holidays (excluding statutory), private health insurance, €1,000 one-off training budget for professional development and wellness.
  • A collaborative and innovative atmosphere with opportunities to impact the company's direction and growth.
