Location:

While this position offers mostly remote work, we do require occasional travel to our Elk Grove Village Illinois data center, near Chicago O'Hare airport.


Job Summary

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for assisting with the architecture & design, implementation, automation, and secure operation of enterprise, cloud, and data center networking platforms supporting mission-critical systems and SaaS environments.

This role requires a highly self-driven and motivated engineer who independently identifies problems, evaluates complex technical environments, and designs, presents, and implements secure, scalable solutions. The Senior Network Engineer operates with a strong sense of ownership and accountability, proactively improving reliability, performance, and security across on-premises data centers, hybrid cloud infrastructures. Emphasis is placed on architecture-first thinking, automation by default, resiliency, and continuous improvement, with security embedded at every layer of the infrastructure.


Responsibilities

  • Provide rotational off-hours support, maintenance, and upgrades.
  • Architect, design, and operate secure, highly available, and scalable network infrastructures across enterprise, data center, and cloud environments.
  • Own and evolve hybrid and multi-cloud networking architectures, including segmentation, transit routing, private connectivity, and interconnect strategies.
  • Design and maintain layer 2–layer 7 networking, including routing, switching, firewalling, load balancing, and traffic optimization.
  • Engineer and operate dynamic routing architectures using protocols such as BGP, OSPF, EVPN, VXLAN, and VRFs.
  • Embed security-first principles into all designs, including zero-trust networking, defense-in-depth, encryption, segmentation, and policy enforcement.
  • Proactively identify architectural, operational, and security gaps, and present clearly documented solution proposals with trade-off analysis.
  • Implement and maintain network automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Ansible, Terraform, Python, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Integrate advanced monitoring, telemetry, and AI-assisted tooling to enable proactive detection, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Perform advanced installation, maintenance, and lifecycle management of routers, switches, firewalls, and load-balancing platforms.
  • Design and support data center networking environments, including redundancy, power-aware design, and fault-tolerant architectures.
  • Lead troubleshooting of complex network and infrastructure incidents, performing root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
  • Collaborate closely with cloud, platform, security, and application teams to deliver end-to-end infrastructure solutions.
  • Maintain accurate network documentation, configuration standards, and backup procedures.
  • Participate in rotational on-call support, maintenance windows, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Research emerging technologies and recommend improvements to advance reliability, security, and scalability.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to other infrastructure team members.


Education

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Travel

  • Ability to travel as needed (minimal).


Experience

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in network engineering within enterprise, data center, or cloud environments.
  • Solid understanding of ITSM concepts.
  • Advanced expertise in dynamic routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EVPN), Data center networking (VXLAN, spine-leaf architectures, VRFs), Network security platforms and policy design
  • HIPAA Awareness and compliance.
  • Experience designing and operating high-availability and low-latency networks.
  • Strong background in network security, compliance, and risk management.
  • Advanced Understanding of Network Automation Ideal (Ansible, Jenkins).
  • Strong understanding of network observability, monitoring, and performance analytics.


Preferred

  • Experience with HP, Cisco, AWS and VMWare.


Compensation

  • Budgeted between $107,750 and $141,675 dependent upon years of applicable experience.
