As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll deliver complex code solutions. You’ll support the build and deployment pipeline and when necessary, diagnose / solve production support or on-call issues. You’ll contribute to overall system design, architecture, security, scalability, reliability, application performance and provide end-to-end support.

What is the work?
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and operate the software that automates lifecycle management and monitoring of bare metal infrastructure. The ideal candidate will combine deep software engineering expertise and a passion for automation with systems, networking, and physical infrastructure knowledge to provide highly reliable, scalable, and secure private cloud resources for H-E-B.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Engineering
- Design, build, and maintain high-quality software systems capable of managing thousands of bare metal physical servers across multiple datacenter environments
- Build and maintain services supporting hardware inventory, asset management, firmware upgrades, and operating system deployment.
- Create solutions for automated hardware validation, diagnostics, remediation, and recovery to improve system resiliency, availability, and operational efficiency.
- Drive observability initiatives related to physical infrastructure, including metrics, logging, tracing, and automated alerting.
- Develop APIs, tools, and workflows that enable self-service infrastructure operations.
- Develop testing frameworks and CI/CD pipelines to ensure software quality and deployment consistency.
- Lead projects from inception through deployment and operational ownership.
- Influence technical strategy for infrastructure automation and platform modernization through participation in architectural reviews and design discussions
- Promote engineering excellence through code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
- Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance on software architecture and engineering best practices.
A Successful Senior Software Engineer In This Role Will
- Reduce operational effort through reusable automation and self-service capabilities that modernize bare metal operations and improve deployment speed, reliability, and consistency.
- Deliver high-quality software systems that effectively manage physical infrastructure at scale.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to a strong engineering culture.
− A Computer Science degree or comparable formal training, certification, or work experience − 5+ years of experience in software development − Proficient in multiple programming languages, technologies, and frameworks.
− Advanced knowledge in system and data architecture, data modeling, and design and capable of architecting and designing at the application or service level using well-accepted design patterns
− Able to review platform designs for strength of engineering solutions, namely performance, sustainability, and iterative development potential.
− Experience with common software engineering tools (e.g., Git, Jira, Confluence)
− Experience successfully producing consistent, high-quality results.
− Comprehensive knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, system architecture and design patterns
− Advanced understanding of development methodologies and processes
- Experience developing and operating infrastructure-as-code solutions using Ansible, Terraform, or similar automation frameworks.
- Experience automating hardware lifecycle management, firmware orchestration/automation, and capacity management across large scale physical infrastructure environments.
- Expertise with bare metal provisioning technologies such as PXE/iPXE, Redfish, and BMC/IPMI
- Experience integrating bare metal infrastructure with virtualization and private cloud solutions.
- Experience with one or more private cloud/virtualization platforms such as OpenStack (Ironic, Nova, Neutron) and/or VMware (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, NSX).
- Experience with Kubernetes and containerization platforms
- Experience using observability tools including Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch, and Datadog
- Knowledge of storage technologies and distributed storage platforms.
- Understanding of security, compliance, and secure infrastructure design principles.
