Platform Engineer – AWS Data Platform


Role Clarification

  • Focus is on platform enablement, infrastructure, and managed services
  • Not expected to build ETL pipelines, but should understand how platform services support data engineers

  • Key Expectation

    • Build and maintain a secure, scalable, and well-governed AWS data platform using managed services and strong infrastructure practices


    Core Responsibilities

    • Manage and operate AWS-based data platform infrastructure
    • Provision and maintain managed database services and data platform components
    • Build and manage CI/CD pipelines for platform and service deployments
    • Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
    • Configure and enforce IAM policies, roles, and access controls
    • Enable secure cross-account integrations within AWS
    • Support platform services including:
    • AWS Glue, Lake Formation, S3, Athena
    • EKS, ECS, API Gateway
    • Ensure security, governance, and access control across data systems
    • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize platform reliability and performance

  • Required Skills

    • Strong hands-on experience with AWS ecosystem
    • Deep expertise in:
    • IAM (policies, roles, cross-account access)
    • Terraform
    • Good understanding of database concepts and managed database services
    • Experience provisioning and managing:
    • PostgreSQL, Aurora/RDS, Redshift (or similar managed databases)
    • Experience with data lake / lakehouse platforms:
    • S3, Glue, Lake Formation, Athena, Iceberg tables
    • Strong troubleshooting skills:
    • IAM issues, data access problems, Lake Formation permissions, Glue Catalog
    • Experience with:
    • Cross-account data access and integrations
    • Security, governance, and access control for data
    • Knowledge of:
    • CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, CodePipeline, etc.)
    • Cloud networking basics (VPC, endpoints, security groups)

    Nice to Have

    • Exposure to:
    • Streaming/data platforms (Kafka, Kinesis)
    • Workflow/orchestration tools (MWAA / Airflow)
    • Experience with:
    • Observability (CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana)
    • AWS cost optimization
