Summary

Make an impact while you learn. The Semester of Service Program offers students a volunteer project-based opportunity to support real Federal missions, gaining hands-on experience and valuable career-ready skills. Students must be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution. With this project, you'll support a data science based project.

Duties

  • The duties of this internship may include, but are not limited to:
  • Create well-documented prototypes that replicate small, non-production modules from legacy SAS workflows (e.g., simple edit checks or summary routines) in Python/R, plus unit edits checks or summary routines.
  • Help understand and replicate small, simple modules from legacy SAS workflows using Python or R.
  • Write clear and well-documented code to ensure it is easy for others to read and maintain.
  • Create unit tests for the new Python or R code to ensure it works correctly and matches the output of the original SAS code.
  • Use synthetic or de-identified sample data to demonstrate that the new code produces the same results as the legacy code
  • Contribute to discussions on code modernization by providing detailed documentation and reference implementations.

Qualifications

Education

To qualify, you must be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution. You also must be in good academic standing as defined by your institution. Attach a copy of your transcripts to your application package for verification.

What to expect next

This is an unpaid volunteer experience. Student volunteers are not considered Federal employees for any purpose other than injury compensation and laws related to the Federal Tort Claims Act, and service is not creditable for leave accrual or other employee benefits.

Participation must be with the permission of the institution at which the volunteer intern is enrolled.
