Summary
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) Engineer serves as a data scientist providing mission critical analytics to detect and mitigate consumer product hazards. This position is located in the Directorate for Epidemiology (EP), Office of Risk Reduction (EXRR) at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Duties
- This position is officially titled Data Scientist (Artificial Intelligence). The working title is AI/ML Engineer. The incumbent supports the modernization of CPSC's analytical ecosystem by designing and implementing AI/ML models, advanced analytical methods, cloud native workflows, and automation that accelerate hazard triage and strengthen data driven decision making across the agency. The AI/ML Engineer performs the following duties: Develops and tests ML models—supervised, unsupervised, NLP, or rules‐based—using established templates, scripts, and standard methods. Performs routine model evaluation, parameter tuning, and troubleshooting using well‐defined criteria set by higher‐graded staff. Conducts quality checks on datasets using predefined rules and raises anomalies to senior team members. Assists in preparing data for cloud‐based model deployment; updates configurations under close supervision. Supports analytical studies applying statistical learning, trend detection, basic simulations, and data‐driven assessments. Conducts literature reviews, method comparisons, and benchmarking assignments to support senior analysts. Participates in meetings with program offices, data engineers, statisticians, and IT specialists to clarify data requirements and deliverables. Develops draft technical documentation for analytical tasks, including dataset descriptions, processing notes, and initial model summaries. Helps develop or refine components of AI/ML‐enabled tools, such as preprocessing modules, pattern‐detection scripts, or API integrations. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
In addition to the mandatory education requirement, all applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: GS-12: 1) Experience assisting with Al/ML model development and data processing; 2) supporting cloud-based deployment and monitoring; 3) applying analytical and machine-learning methods to identify patterns or emerging trends; and 4) collaborating with technical teams to implement practical, data-driven solutions. GS-13: 1) Experience developing and evaluating Al/ML models; 2) designing and maintaining data ingestion and transformation workflows; 3) working with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery/Deployment (CI/CD) tools and pipelines; 4) deploying and monitoring models in cloud environments; 5) conducting analytical research to identify patterns trends or emerging trends; and 6) collaborating with technical and program teams to implement Al-enabled solutions. Education
Mandatory Education Requirement. All applicants must meet one of the following requirements to qualify: A. A bachelor's or higher degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience. In addition to meeting the basic education requirements indicated above, applicants must have specialized experience in the amounts shown below: GS-12: There is no substitution for specialized experience for this grade level. Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (as stated above) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level. GS-13: There is no substitution for specialized experience for this grade level. Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (as stated above) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level. You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Must be a U.S. Citizen. This is a Public Trust Position. Employment in this position requires a background investigation.
