Job SummaryThe Vice President of Business Development is a senior executive responsible for driving revenue growth, expanding market presence, and developing strategic partnerships across the energy value chain. This role focuses on identifying and executing high-impact commercial opportunities, including long-term energy supply contracts, infrastructure investments, joint ventures, and market expansion initiatives.
The VP plays a critical role in shaping the company’s growth strategy across traditional energy (oil & gas, utilities) and emerging sectors (renewables, hydrogen, carbon capture, battery storage, and grid modernization).
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Growth & Market Expansion- Develop and execute enterprise-level business development strategies aligned with corporate objectives.
- Identify new market opportunities in domestic and international energy sectors.
- Lead expansion into renewable energy, decarbonization technologies, and emerging energy markets.
- Evaluate industry trends including energy transition, ESG requirements, and commodity cycles.
- Lead negotiations for large-scale energy contracts, including power purchase agreements (PPAs), gas supply agreements, and infrastructure deals.
- Structure complex commercial transactions, partnerships, and long-term offtake agreements.
- Oversee proposal development, bidding strategy, and contract execution.
- Drive revenue generation through strategic deal-making and customer acquisition.
- Build and maintain relationships with utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), government agencies, investors, and industrial customers.
- Establish joint ventures and strategic alliances with energy developers and infrastructure partners.
- Represent the company in high-level industry forums, conferences, and regulatory discussions.
- Strengthen long-term customer and partner relationships.
- Identify acquisition targets, greenfield projects, and strategic investments.
- Lead due diligence, valuation, and deal structuring processes.
- Collaborate with finance and legal teams on transaction execution.
- Evaluate infrastructure assets such as pipelines, power plants, and renewable energy projects.
- Develop business cases and financial models for major projects and investments.
- Work with finance teams on forecasting, budgeting, and capital allocation strategies.
- Evaluate project profitability, risk exposure, and long-term return on investment.
- Support enterprise-wide strategic planning initiatives.
- Monitor global energy markets, commodity pricing, and competitive activity.
- Track regulatory developments in energy policy, emissions standards, and environmental compliance.
- Assess risks and opportunities related to geopolitical and macroeconomic factors.
- Support ESG strategy and sustainability initiatives.
- Partner with engineering, operations, finance, legal, and project development teams.
- Present strategic initiatives and business performance to executive leadership and board members.
- Lead cross-functional growth initiatives and corporate transformation programs.
- Mentor senior managers and business development teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Economics, or related field required.
- MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- 15–20+ years of experience in business development, energy trading, corporate strategy, or commercial leadership.
- Strong knowledge of energy markets, infrastructure projects, and commercial contracting.
- Experience in oil & gas, utilities, renewable energy, or energy infrastructure sectors.
- Proven track record of leading high-value deals and revenue growth initiatives.
- Strong negotiation and deal structuring expertise.
- Advanced financial modeling and valuation skills.
- Strategic thinking and executive-level decision-making.
- Deep understanding of energy markets and regulatory environments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Ability to manage complex, multi-million or multi-billion-dollar projects.
- Leadership experience in cross-functional and global teams.
- Executive corporate environment with hybrid flexibility depending on organization.
- Frequent domestic and international travel for deal negotiations, client meetings, and industry events.
- Typically ranges from $200,000 to $400,000+ annually
- Additional compensation may include performance bonuses, equity, long-term incentives, and deal-based commissions.
