Duties: Maintains custodial care and control of the incarcerated individuals housed at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility by escorting them under restraint; patrolling facilities; completing periodic rounds, head counts, and security checks of the building, grounds and incarcerated individuals assigned areas in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; develops working relationships with incarcerated individuals by referring individuals to appropriate supportive services (i.e., medial, psychiatric, vocational, etc.) to aid in rehabilitation and to foster an atmosphere of cooperation between incarcerated individuals and staff.

Working conditions: This position does require working in the Barnstable County Correctional Facility for eight (8) hours per day or longer. This position does require working with individuals currently incarcerated at the Barnstable County Corrections Facility.

Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of graduation from the Academy (October 2026).
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent certificate at time of application.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the US.
Applicants must have a current, valid and renewable Massachusetts Class D Driver's License.
Applicants must have the ability to obtain a license to carry a firearm in Massachusetts or already possess one.
Position Requirements:
Candidates will be required to complete and pass a general knowledge written exam.
Candidates will be required to complete a physical fitness test.
Candidates will be required to submit to a full background check.
Candidates will be required to have a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and post-offer abilities evaluation.
Candidates will be required to attend and graduate from a twelve (12) week paid Correctional Officer Academy at the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office.
