Position Summary
The Assistant Program Director (APD) provides leadership and operational support in collaboration with the Program Director. The APD assists with staff supervision, hiring, training, and daily program operations. This role ensures that services are delivered in an ethical, professional, and person-centered manner, consistent with APIS/RHD values and regulatory standards.
The APD plays a key role in supporting staff performance, maintaining compliance, and promoting a positive environment for both individuals served and employees.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership, Staff Management & Organizational Strategy
- Provide supervision and leadership to Residential Managers/Program Managers and Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), including oversight of daily operations, implementation of individual service plans, and documentation practices
- Supervise Fiscal/Administrative staff, medical staff, and Program Specialists in the absence of the Program Director
- Support recruitment efforts in collaboration with the Fiscal Administrator or Office Manager, including scheduling interviews, participating in candidate selection, and assisting with hiring and onboarding
- Provide guidance and oversight to management staff regarding supervision practices, including performance management and progressive discipline when necessary
- Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and person-centered care
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Review site documentation to ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements
- Prepare for and support internal and external audits
- Ensure adherence to licensing, funding, and organizational standards, including APIS/RHD policies and procedures
Finance, Operations & Program Support
- Support the Program Director in managing program operations in alignment with budgetary, licensing, and funding requirements
- Assist with oversight of staffing patterns, scheduling, and resource allocation
- Provide direct support and intervention to individuals and staff during crisis situations
- Foster an environment that promotes skill development, independence, and access to community resources
- Complete additional duties as assigned to support program success
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field from an accredited institution preferred with a minimum of 3 years of experience in mental health/IDD direct service and 2 years of supervisory experience
OR - High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of 7 years of experience in mental health/IDD direct service, including 2 years of supervisory experience
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and general computer systems
- Valid driver’s license with a minimum of 3 years driving experience and access to a reliable personal vehicle
- Ability to obtain and maintain required clearances, including criminal background check, FBI clearance, and child abuse clearance (if applicable)

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in residential and office settings across multiple locations
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift (up to 50 lbs), and navigate stairs as needed
- Frequent use of computers, phones, and office equipment
- Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle for program-related travel
Additional Requirements
- Maintain compliance with all OSHA, HIPAA, and organizational policies and procedures
- Complete all required trainings, including CPR/First Aid and mandated reporting
- Maintain a professional demeanor and exercise sound judgment in all aspects of the role
