FinOps Analyst

Contract to Hire

Hybrid- Charlotte, NC or Denver, CO

Why This Role Exists

One of our clients is looking to bring on a FinOps Analyst to support the BusOps Focus team that manages visibility and optimization across $15.5M+ per month in hybrid cloud spend (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI). The data foundation is built. The dashboards exist. What is missing is a dedicated practitioner who owns the day-to-day engagement with account owners — translating data into action, driving accountability, and moving the team from Crawl to Walk on the FinOps maturity model.

This is not a reporting role. This is a practitioner role. The analyst will own a portfolio of account owners (500+), have direct conversations about cost and optimization, and be accountable for measurable outcomes.

Core Responsibilities:

Account Owner Engagement (40%)

  • Own a portfolio of assigned account owners across AWS, Azure, GCP, and/or OCI
  • Conduct monthly cost review conversations — spend trends, anomalies, optimization opportunities
  • Deliver rightsizing and savings plan recommendations with clear business context
  • Track action items from each review and follow up on adoption
  • Escalate unresolved issues to Manager after two cycles

Anomaly Detection and Management (20%)

  • Monitor spend patterns for anomalies (>20% week-over-week spikes)
  • Investigate root cause using Astro, CostHawk, and billing data tables
  • Notify account owners with context and recommended action
  • Track resolution and update anomaly log

Forecasting and Budget Support (20%)

  • Support account owners in building and maintaining cloud spend forecasts
  • Produce monthly budget vs. actual variance analysis for assigned portfolio
  • Flag teams trending over budget with lead time to course-correct
  • Contribute to the monthly executive spend report narrative

Tagging Compliance and Optimization (10%)

  • Monitor tagging compliance for assigned account owner portfolio
  • Follow up with non-compliant owners and track remediation
  • Coordinate with data engineering on tag coverage metrics
  • Support the weekly tagging compliance dashboard distribution

FinOps Education and Enablement (10%)

  • Onboard new account owners to the FinOps engagement model
  • Coordinate the FinOps Champions program (monthly sync, training materials)
  • Contribute to FinOps training content and documentation
  • Represent the FinOps team in cross-functional meetings

Required Qualifications:

Experience

  • 2+ years in cloud financial management, cost optimization, FinOps, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with engineering or product teams on cloud cost topics
  • Experience with AWS and at least one other cloud provider: Azure, GCP, OCI
  • Experience producing cost analysis, variance reports, or financial summaries for non-technical audiences

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, or GCP Billing console
  • Ability to query data using SQL (basic to intermediate — reading and modifying queries, not building pipelines)
  • Familiarity with BI/reporting tools — Tableau, QuickSight, or equivalent
  • Understanding of cloud billing concepts: reserved instances, savings plans, spot/preemptible, committed use discounts
  • Familiarity with tagging/labeling strategies and their role in cost allocation

Analytical Skills

  • Ability to identify cost drivers from billing data without being told where to look
  • Comfortable building and presenting variance analysis (budget vs. actual, MoM, YoY)
  • Able to translate raw cost data into a clear narrative for a non-technical account owner
  • Attention to data quality — flags issues rather than publishing bad numbers

Communication Skills

  • Comfortable leading 1:1 conversations with engineering managers and directors
  • Able to deliver an optimization recommendation without being adversarial
  • Clear written communication — can produce a concise email summary of a cost review
  • Comfortable presenting to small groups (Champions program, team syncs)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FinOps Certified Practitioner (FinOps Foundation) — or willingness to obtain within 90 days
  • FinOps Certified FOCUS Analyst — or willingness to obtain within 6 months
  • Experience with FOCUS (FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification) data format
  • Experience in a multi-cloud environment (not just AWS)
  • Familiarity with Astro, CostHawk, or similar in-house FinOps tooling
  • Experience with Savings Plan or Reserved Instance purchase analysis
  • Background in IT financial management (ITFM) or IT asset management (ITAM)
