Essential Job Functions
- Performs unit-receptionist activities including but not limited to: coordinates incoming, outgoing, and intra-unit communications; handles customer requests; may determine room assignments for patients, inter-unit transfers, BCA, lift batteries, blanket warmer, cardiac monitors, maintains patient /family education information/brochures. Coordinates the ordering of supplies per par levels. Answers unit telephones courteously and quickly addresses the caller’s needs. Observes and initiates maintenance requisition to repair equipment, furniture, and building fixtures. Maintains daily unit worksheet (ADT board). Maintains Social Service log.
- Performs hourly rounding assessing patient requests including delivery of personal care items, water, etc. Communicates patient clinical requests to nursing staff.
- Answers patient call lights courteously and quickly addresses the patient’s needs.
- Transports ambulatory/wheelchair patients as directed by the RN.
- Assists with patient discharge/transfer processes functions in STAR (or similar program) or as appropriate.
- Manages physician consultations and charts accordingly in Epic Care PATH. Greets physician on the unit. Introduces physician to new associates. Locates patient’s nurse for physician when necessary.
- Coordinates clinical data collection via fax, printers, and tube system, and assures that documentation is placed in paper-light chart and/or distributed to appropriate personnel. Maintains paper-light chart. Obtains chart forms for patient transfers, patient consents, blood permits, etc. as needed or requested.
- Assures that patient paper-light chart contains face sheets, Optio labels, N-17 and other forms deemed necessary by the unit. Ensures unacknowledged and stat physician orders in Epic Care PATH are communicated to nursing staff. Documents according to hospital policy. Enters patient billing as required.
- Preferred Education: High School Diploma or GED
- Licensure/Certification Required: Medical Terminology course or completion within one year. Heart Saver.
- Minimum Years and Type of Experience: Previous experience working in hospital setting. Previous unit clerk experience or equivalent preferred.
- Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Must possess healthcare knowledge to communicate with medical professionals. Must possess strong communications and customer service skills and ability to defuse situations.
- Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Computer literacy (charting, emails, and other documentation).
- Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
- May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse.
- May be required to use physical restraints.
- May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights.
- May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids. *
- May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials. *
- May have periods of constant interruptions.
- Other: Ability to work overtime as needed.
