The successful incumbent will play a key role in market development, broker relationship management, and regional strategy, while also coaching and mentoring team members to support ongoing technical and professional development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow Liberty's Guidelines for Inclusion and encourage its use at Liberty. Build personal DE&I knowledge and act as an early adopter of new DE&I skills and processes to drive positive change
- Manage a portfolio of new and renewal commercial property and P&C package business, contributing to profitable growth across BC and the Western Region
- Significantly contribute to the region's new business goals by maintaining a quality pipeline of prospects through targeted marketing, cross-selling and account rounding efforts with our key broker partners
- Underwrite a diverse range of risks including real estate, construction, hospitality, public sector, and resource-based industries (e.g., forestry, mining)
- Apply strong CAT underwriting discipline, including earthquake and flood risk assessment, using industry tools and internal models
- Maintain strong broker relationships across the BC marketplace (Vancouver, Lower Mainland & key regional hubs), driving pipeline through targeted marketing and distribution strategies.
- Collaborate with internal partners (Risk Engineering, Claims, Actuarial) to ensure optimal risk selection, pricing, and portfolio performance
- Ensure proper risk selection, exposure evaluation and profitable T&Cs, while meeting file documentation standards; ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines and regional strategy
- Contribute to regional growth strategy in Western Canada; providing market insights and identifying emerging opportunities (e.g., infrastructure, climate-related risks, ESG considerations)
- Support development of the underwriting team through mentorship, referral handling, and sharing of best practices.
- Deliver high-quality service to brokers and clients, contributing to Liberty's reputation as a technical and relationship-led market in BC
- Continuously enhance knowledge of local market conditions, CAT trends, and regulatory landscape in British Columbia
- 5+ years (Senior UW) / 8-10+ years (Executive UW / AVP) experience underwriting commercial P&C insurance - strong emphasis on property and CAT-exposed risks
- Strong understanding of earthquake modeling, flood exposure, and CAT aggregation in Western Canada.
- Proven experience building and managing relationships with major BC brokers and distribution partners
- Deep knowledge of P&C policy wordings and claims implications, particularly for complex property risks.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills with a profitability mindset and disciplined risk selection approach.
- Ability to operate effectively in a competitive Vancouver market, balancing growth with underwriting discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams with a focus on cross-selling and account rounding.
- Effective at change management and adapting to new systems and processes
- Strong communication, negotiation, organizational, time management and presentation skills.
- Post-secondary and Insurance designations (CIP, FCIP) or equivalent are considered assets.
- Experience mentoring or leading others preferred - particularly for AVP / Executive UW level
